In today’s video I got a question from our friend who is a thin guy and is wanting to become a bigger stronger person for grappling.
Currently he’s lifting and doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and he’s curious if I have any tips on getting bigger and stronger.
In this video I share some really simple tips to get bigger and stronger from my experience.
The first idea I share is about adopting the eating habits of a bigger person. This may sound simple or maybe unimportant.
But in most cases I see that smaller people have trouble gaining weight in large part because they aren’t eating very much. So the 1st thing is to add more good food to the mix.
The second tip I share is to adopt the mindset of a bigger guy who lifts. In the video I share a story about one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students who came in in the 130s and is now around 160s.
And he adopted the mindset of a meathead after becoming friends with one of the Brown Belts in the gym.
Finally he was curious if Brazilian Jiujitsu would hurt his weight training and weight gain. And I end the video with sharing tips on how to avoid a situation where BJJ negatively affects your weight training.
If you’re in a similar situation then I hope this video is helpful!

Black-Belt/Adult/Female/Light-Feather – Final
I got asked about how to become more creative with BJJ. This question comes from our friend who is doing really well.
Things are moving along in a good way. His techniques are working just fine. But he wants to adapt things to create his own style like he sees others doing.
In this video I’ll talk about a rather uncreative way that creativity comes about in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
And it starts with the idea that techniques spread like infectious diseases.
For example.
I got thrown this Saturday. And not just with any throw. . .It was a beautiful throw.
It came at the hands of my buddy Dru ( a brown belt) who was in town this weekend.
He’s from south Florida and trained with Cyborg. And the throw he hit me with he learned that from Cyborg. Cyborg taught him this throw both by instruction and hitting him with it during rolling.
Now when he threw me in front of all of my students, did I get mad? Nah I actually laughed told him it was a “pretty” throw and kept rolling.
And then after we got done rolling I had him show me the technique so that I can drill it!
This is how techniques spread. From one person to the next like an infection or disease.
Each infected person making the technique their own.
Now with any disease after it gets cured or treated. It begins to adapt, right?
The same happens in Brazilian Jiujitsu. As you add new techniques to the mix. Your training partners will adapt to stop your moves and submissions. And then you’ll be forced to adapt them to new situations.
This adapting is a point where creativity often comes back in. Not by sheer creativity but from necessity.
I hope you enjoyed the ramble!

Do you struggle finishing Kimura’s against Big Strong People? This is the BJJ technique question for today.
In the question our friend says when he is training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he is able to secure the Kimura grip (double wrist lock) against his training partners. But once he does, he is unable to finish it.
The strong person just powers out of the shoulder lock.
In this video I show some details about the Kimura that I think would be helpful from top or bottom position. It’s a mistake a lot of my newer grapplers make when performing many armlocks and submissions in BJJ.
Before we continue, understand that if you’re like 100lbs and your partner is 300lbs. The Kimura is probably not going to be your “go-to” submission. It’s just not the best idea for someone that much bigger than you.
But you can still Kimura a larger person. I’ve been able to finish it against some very large guys. Sometimes 60-100lbs heavier than me.
One reason for my ability to finish the lock is the detail of using the whole body I show in this video.
I hope the video is helpful with your ability to finish the Kimura submission in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Whether you’re rolling or in a BJJ competition or tournament.
