Shrimpin Ain't Easy by Brent Littell (On Demand)
You have spent hours of shrimping across the mat before every class. You hear your instructor scream for you to do it whenever you are on bottom. Even in your sleep you find yourself shrimping the covers off of you. However, in spite of all of that, you still have not been able to effectively utilize the hip escape when sparring. You find yourself pushing and pushing and not going anywhere. You give up on hip escaping and try a more complicated sweep or bump move. In fact, you write off the motion altogether as something just to warm up with.
If this sounds like you, then this instructional is here to help. Brent Littell will take you through a step by step guide of how to use the shrimp in almost every bottom position. He demonstrates the frames needed to make the escapes work and adds context to the movements so you know exactly when to use them. By the end of your journey through this material, guard recovery will feel almost too easy.
Don’t continue to waste hours of your mat time repeating the same mistakes, spend a short time with this information and shrimp your way out of everything.
About the instructor:
Brent Littell has the unique distinction of being one of only people in the world to have black belts in both gi and no gi jiu jitsu. He was the sixth person ever to receive his black belt in no gi bjj from Eddie Bravo, and he was the first person ever to receive his black belt in gi from Gracie Barra after holding rank as a black belt in no gi. Brent has extensive instructing experience and has taught in some of the most hallowed bjj institutions in the world. He was Tenth Planet’s first ever fundamentals instructor at their headquarters in Hollywood, California, and presently is an instructor at the headquarters for Gracie Barra, the largest and most successful bjj team ever. His knowledge of both gi and no gi jiu jitsu, as well as his amazing teaching style, makes him one of the most sought out bjj teachers around. He has worked with everyone from beginners in the sport to UFC fighters to world champions. His teaching style makes complex concepts accessible to all. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best.

Blue Belt Blues in BJJ doesn’t really exist. I’m going to just start with that. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some new Blue Belts get very attached to this idea of The Belt Blues as a reason why they’re having trouble being motivated.
And I guess if you put too much focus on the Blue Belt it could be tough. But I think the idea of attaching yourself and identifying with something is dangerous.
If you believe you are something, you’re that. So if you think you have Blue Belt Blues, then you have it.
But if you just look at it like a short lived funk in your Brazilian Jiujitsu training that you need to shake off instead of some sort of “condition” you’ll probably find it lasts a much shorter time.
In this video I discuss this topic as our friend is struggling with competitions and has become gripped by this idea of Blue Belt Blues.
If you’re struggling as a new Blue Belt in BJJ. I hope this video helps!

Here’s some of the best action from the 2019 American National Day 1.
In this video I answer a question about the BJJ Arm Triangle Choke. The question was mainly about how to make the choke tighter rather than squeezing on someones jaw.
In the video I give some of my favorite adjustments to making the Arm Triangle tighter and a much cleaner submission rather than just driving into someones face.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu we always need to remember what our goal is with the choke submissions. Most often it’s to apply pressure to the carotids.
So when you’re drilling and practicing your techniques it’s important to use finesse and apply the submissions with focus on the true objective of that move.
During practice if you feel like you have to squeeze with all your might, it’s probably not technically sound.
Now when it comes to a hard roll or Brazilian Jiujitsu competition. That’s when you add the strength element into things.
Either way if you are struggling to finish the arm triangle choke. I hope this video is useful!

Recently I got a question from a female BJJ Blue Belt who was recently asked to help coach with a female only class. She is excited about the prospect but also nervous.
She’s nervous 1st because she is still beginning herself and so she’s wondering how to go from the mentality of a student to an assistant coach. She’s also curious about how she can help women stick around with training. She’s the only woman currently and she’d like to have other female training partners.
In this video I talk about a few things.
I discuss how I was in a similar situation when I was a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and was asked to help. I go through how I did things in the hopes of helping our friend.
The big idea I share in this video though is about the way we learn as humans. Which is through modeling others and then creating our own style.
We do this through speech and even our BJJ training. I liken it to coming up to a forest and having a blazed trail. Someone has to blaze the trail.
And by carving a path for women in her area I think Karin will accomplish her goal of helping women stick around but also becoming a better teacher.
If you’re in a similar situation I hope the video helps!
