The Guillotine Choke is perhaps the most basic submission hold in fighting. It comes instinctively to just about everyone.

What isn’t so simple, is escaping a guillotine. Often, your instincts work against you and put you in more danger.

In this video, I will show you what I call the Elbow Escape. This works for neck only (no arm inside grip) guillotines, and is pretty much the only escape I use.

It is simple and should be a part of everyone’s defensive skill set.

About Head Instructor Lachlan Giles:

Lachlan earned his BJJ black belt in July 2012 and is the 2014 Australian Jiu-Jitsu Grand Prix Champion, multiple time Pan Pacific and Victorian Jiu Jitsu Champion and has competed at 4 World Championship events.

In 2014 he completed a clean sweep of the black belt division at Australia’s most prestigious competition, the Pan Pacific Championships, winning 4 gold medals. In 2015, he competed in the ADCC Championship and later reached the semi-finals of EBI5.

In 2016 he won the ADCC Asian Trials and earned a spot at the 2017 ADCC Championship which will be held in Helsinki, Finland.

Outside of BJJ, he works as a physiotherapist, and is currently completing his PhD at La Trobe University.

The guillotine is often achieved from guard. But from turtle when you are behind your opponent – less often. And this presents a surprise opportunity. And a surprise often means the upper hand which means submission. The great thing is – it’s super easy. Just watch this video and the few little tricks and cheats you need to use to get this great guillotine attack. Trust me….once you do this a few times….it will become addictive. Derrick Darling shows how to attack with an Ankle Pick Throw after using a Guillotine control set up at John Saylor’s Shingitai Training Camp in 2016.

Here’s a sweet little choke from double under-hooks that uses the same grip structure as my “evil ninja” choke. Pay close attention to the grips as it’s a blood choke – not a trachea choke. Give it a try and Happy Training!
