How to Establish Control Against a Standing Opponent
If your opponent is standing up and detached from you then he has a lot of freedom of motion and can run around your legs if he’s fast. Of course you could stand up, but if his takedowns are better than yours and you want to stay on the ground then you have to latch onto him somehow. Here’s one of my favourite sequences to control an opponent who’s standing in front of me when I’m sitting in the guard.
This is an excerpt from my new BJJ instructional, about which you can find out more at http://www.grapplearts.com/slx
Part 5 of 5 – Transition from X Guard INTO a Single LEG X
In the final part of our short series…this is transitioning from an over hook x-guard to a single leg X. Actually, it really is an Ashi Garami – meaning leg entanglement. But as you will see from the video, the transition can be extremely quick. And because of this it opens up many, many options for you. Take a look at the video and give it a try on the mat. Let me know how it goes…
Part 4 of 5 – An AWESOME X Guard SIDE KICK Sweep!
We are now dealing with a savvy opponent. They are aware of the sweeps from x-guard and they know that they need to control the variables. By moving and posting forward. But that just opens up another opportunity with a simple ‘sidekick’ – old school karate style. But used to create distance, not damage. And with that distance, opportunities open up. Watch the video. Give it a try on the mat and let me know how it goes.
Part 2 of 5: The Incredibly EFFECTIVE Overhook X Guard SWEEP!
Continuing on with the Overhook x-guard series…we now look at a very basic sweep from this position. It might be basic but is sure is effective. Quick to execute against your opponent and opens up many submission opportunities. This is a taster and I think you will like it. Take a look. Try it on the mat. And let me know what you think.
Part 1 of 5: The AWESOME OverHook X-GUARD!

You might have seen me use this in rolling. It’s a fantastic submission and offers a level of leverage that the regular footlock does not have. It catches people by surprise and is very effective in competition. Watch the video. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

A QUICK ROLL with 7 of my BLUE BELT Students!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZrVMnhVgVc
I try and roll in a long sequence with my students where they come in fresh one after the other after I’ve had a good rolling session during class. This keeps my cardio up and ensures that I need to keep on top of my game. Take a look at this video where I use some of the techniques that I’ve spoken about in previous videos. If there are some moves that I use that you would like me to cover in future video tutorials. Please just ask in the comment box below. Enjoy!
The Brilliant PILLOW Defence!
Is there a position you can get into where when you are being crushed…you can be safe (relatively), regain your breath and wait for a (very likely) opening for you to regain control? well, the Pillow Defence might be such a position. And therefore a must for anyone’s game. Check out this video. It is super easy to execute. Try it on the mat and let me know how it goes…
