This Powerful Grip Creates Crazy Pressure from Half Guard Bottom
The Half Guard in BJJ is by far one of my favorite positions in Gi or No Gi. There’s so many options, grips and adjustments to mix it up with.
In this video I show a really STRONG grip to use in the Gi.
I put an emphasis on strong because it really locks the person down and creates crazy pressure from the bottom of Half Guard.
I’ve found from years of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that once someone knows that I’m a Half Guard player.
They tend to try and get away from me.
This Back Strap grip doesn’t allow them to do that.
I’ve used this grip in rolling and competitions with plenty of success.
The gi loops around their back and puts an immense amount of pressure which completely locks the person up. If they try to push back or get away.
It’s usually not an option.
In the video I show one simple option that allows you to get to Back Mount and create a strong angle.
But there are so many sweeps and options you can add into your Brazilian Jiujitsu game with the grip.
So if you’re a BJJ Half Guard player and you’re looking for another option to throw in to your game.
Try the Back Strap grip.
Hope the technique helps!

Spider Guard Pass Step on Thigh
This is a very common pass to the Spider Guard. It is highly effective throughout all of the ranks if you can get standing on the thigh. Keep in mind, against an active Spider Guard Player that your timing and spatial control will have to be extremely well controlled in order to stand on the thigh. It is for that reason that I say this pass is a medium percentage pass. Not because it’s not good, but becuase it is common enough that most avid Spider Guard players are on the look out for this movement.
I point out in the video that you want to step on the bottom leg when it is straight. Throughout the week we had a lot of conversations about this bottom leg, and although I say the leg should be straight, it is ok to step on that leg at any time when you can get to it. Pinning it to the ground has a lot of power, especially when it comes to breaking the grip on the sleeve.
This move is best used in conjunction with the other passes. If you go to step on the thigh , and they pump their legs and move their hips away from the step it’s totally ok to combine this with the last pass that I posted. It will also work in conjunction with the future passes that I will post.
Breaking Posture in the Guard When Your Opponent Has a Strong Belt Grip
A strong belt grip means your opponent can create good posture and force your guard open. Here’s how to use that grip against him and set him up for chokes and armlocks to finish him!
Use This Grip Break to Stop the Basic Guard Break
Strong Grips in BJJ can be frustrating or a lot of fun depending on whether or not you are the one that has them or know how to deal with them.
Recently I got asked a question about the common lapel grip used when breaking Full Guard. Basically our friend Will is unable to remove the lapel grip and his opponent’s are able to break and pass his guard.
His question was simply about how to disable the lapel grip.
But as is usually with me and my answers to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu questions. I tend to be a little long winded and bounce around all over the place.
So in addition to showing a solid grip break that will stop the top person’s guard break. I also show how you can use it to setup a number of different attacks from a very strong offensive position from Guard.
From the position I show a basic straight armlock a long with a sweep.
So if you’re having trouble with that particular guard break or just the grips. I hope that this grip break and attacking position is useful for you in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training or competitions.

Should I Quit Gi BJJ and Do 10th Planet ? (Frustrated with Grips)
Do you ever get frustrated with the Gi in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ? I’m sure you probably do, and if you don’t, give it time.
For me with my wrestling background and my incessant desire to move around. Have you ever noticed how much I rock around in the videos?
I hate the Gi when I first started BJJ. And I’ve had a love hate relationship with the kimono.
In this video, one of our friend’s has a specific question about dealing with a Grip from Back Mount during rolling in his gym. And I will talk about this at a later time. In his message he words it as, “should I give up the gi and just do 10th planet?” Meaning, should I just do No Gi BJJ training.
But in the meantime I wanted to share some thoughts on how to approach BJJ training and the various frustrations that come with it. Because if it isn’t the gi, it will be something else.
In this video I share a couple of stories of how I got frustrated with the gi. 1 story in particular was kind of funny because I ended up destroying a beautiful BJJ gi in the process.
If you’re experiencing some trouble with the gi in BJJ. I hope this video is helpful to you and your BJJ training.
Thanks!
