Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Game of Human Chess
Please visit www.AthleticBodyCare.com for all your athletic skin care needs!
This is a short attempt to capture the beauty that is the martial art of brazilian jiu-jitsu in the world of mma and on the tatame. There is so much out there, that if I used everything, it would be many hours of footage. This is my video submission towards the Athletic Body Care video sponsorship contest for 2010.
My name is Terry Ng and I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt based out of Toronto, Canada. I love competing and training. Having the registration fees for tournaments covered would help me a great deal to be able to go out to different places to train and better my jiu jitsu game more often. I want to compete against the worlds best one day on the biggest stages of jiu jitsu. But to get there and develop, I need to train with and face the worlds best. Please help me get there!
Please support me by viewing the video and sending it to others as well 🙂 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is life!
The clips in the video were taken from a variety of youtube video sources. There is absolutely no intention on my part on any type of copyright infringement. If you see a clip that was from your video, I apologize for not creating a credit section. Please PM me and I will create a list of credits. The video was rushed for production. I apologize once again, PM me, and I will give credit ASAP.

Defense against a Takedown on the Street
An opponent charges you, grabs your legs, lifts you up and slams you into the ground. From there, he can mount you and rain down punches, or just kick you non-stop before you get a chance to recover.
In this video, Nick will show you several ways to protect yourself against this move. Big guys are especially fond of this takedown, but what Nick teaches in the clip will work well with any attacker.
Remember – you want to intercept a takedown as soon as possible. Ideally – before the opponent has a chance to grab you. When the guy charges you, push into his shoulders with your forearms – not your palms (they can slip off)! Push back towards him and slightly down, to keep your balance and break the attacker’s momentum. Alternatively, as you push back, step aside to direct the opponent away from you.
Now, if he does grab you, immediately counter with a neck crank. Turn his head to the side or way back, so the attacker loses balance and his momentum dissipates completely. This works even if he has already lifted you off the ground. Crank his neck, punch him in the throat, put your fingers into his eyes – do whatever it takes to interrupt the takedown.
If the opponent goes for a very low grab, you can direct him into the ground and pull a shirt over his head, as Nick demonstrates. From there, you can easily push him away or try to knock the guy out.
As you can see, despite how scary this takedown is, there are several great ways to defend against it in the street. Even if your attacker is bigger then you, by re-directing his momentum you can stay on your feet and fight back – which is all that matters!
