Today’s we’ve got a question from a follower who we’ll call “Bob”.
Bob say’s that it’s a bit embarrassing but sends it anyways.
Bob has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for several years now, but they feel so much anxiety and nervousness when it comes to rolling with better people, or bigger/stronger people, even though they’re 230lbs themselves.
They say a lot of times when they go against these type of people, they build them up to be much more than they actually are, even if Bob is bigger than this person.
They say during rolls that they’re “fight or flight” kicks in and they tend to only roll with the smaller people because they “hate feeling powerless, hate being submitted, and hate being scared of rolling with the bigger/better/stronger guys.”
He sends me the message asking, “any idea on how I can be less scared rolling with these bigger/stronger guys?”
I actually choose to answer this, versus many other questions I received, because I have personally dealt with this.
We’ve all got some mental baggage.
Mine is anxiety and I have had to find strategies to deal with it. This means anxiety with Jiu-Jitsu is something I had to deal with a lot too. This was true for practice and competitions.
In this video I’ll give you guys a few things I did to keep the anxiety out of “the driver’s seat” that really have helped and continue to help me a long my BJJ career.
Hopefully this helped you out Bob, and hopefully this helps anyone else out there that feels like they’re dealing with something similar.

I’ve received some questions about what to do regarding a stiff lower back from grappling. One piece of the puzzle is to have a decent warm up and to get your body primed to move.
Here are a few of the movements that I am utilizing as part of my warm up for BJJ.
I have made some modifications to the movements for my preference and you can adjust and add as needed. Again this is a limited routine showing a few useful movements I like.
My recommendation is to try these movements out, see what feels tight or what doesn’t, and then go from there to create a routine or movements that are useful for you and your needs.

Today we’ve got a question from a bigger White Belt named Lee.
He’s been training for about a year and is finally climbing up the “pecking order”, especially for the less experienced guys in the room.
At this point he is finally getting the better of the newer white belts, but he has a question about rolling with them.
He wonders if he should allow them to work a little bit, which is what he says he does now, or if he should I just roll like “normal” and go after them.
He doesn’t want to seem overconfident or arrogant though, and so he’s not sure if “letting them work” is a good look.
Lee is also wondering what my philosophy is when I roll with less experienced grapplers or brand-new white belts.
In this video I’ll answer Lee’s initial question & share with you guys how I go about training with less experienced people in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and how I get the most out of the roll: both helping that person grown & making myself better at the same time.
Hopefully this video answers your question Lee, and if any of you had a similar question then I hope you found it helpful too!

Today’s video comes from a Blue Belt who has recently had a weird situation at him BJJ gym.
Recently a brand new White Belt started training. And it just so happens that this white belt has history with Jason. . . not good history either! Apparently, the guy bullied Jason around and ended up stealing money from him.
Now, Jason said he tried to leave those feelings outside of the gym since Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is something he does to get away from the craziness of the outside world. Well, the white belt started talking negatively about Jason. Not in the fun we’re-friends-trash-talking, but in a bullying way.
So he sends in a message to see if I could give him a useful perspective that could help with the situation.
Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!
