Black-Belt/Adult/Male/Middle – Semi-Final
The Von Flue is one of the simplest chokes in grappling and it is ultra deceptive. If your opponent grabs your head from side control, it’s always right around the corner. The Von Flue Choke was made famous by Jason Von Flue, but has really been pushed into the mind of MMA fans by OSP, Ovince St Preux. He has 4 finishes in the UFC with this move and he is just awesome at it.
Weight distribution is a crucial part of any technique, and the Von Flue is no exception.Check out these details from 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Brandon Mccaghren, bmac, and see if this helps you get some extra mileage from the technique.

“When i was a blue belt, i asked Royce how to escape the triangle. He said don’t get triangled. Just like the meme says. Pissed me off. Then many years later i realized he was right.
Greg and Spenser taught the stack pass all the time. We learned it and practiced it, but i was always looking for a different answer. Then the seminar that i got my brown belt Royce taught the stack pass. Challenged anyone in the room to triangle him.
That was the day i decided that i had to get good at it!”

I’m not saying not to learn advanced techniques or don’t prepare for contingencies (“what if”s).
But, if you master solid foundations and basic principles then that solves most of the problems you’ll encounter.
A good example is in last night’s class, I told my students that if they keep their hands up and elbows in then that will solves 90% of your problems.
You don’t have to learn how to defend all the headlock variations if your hands are already in a position to intercept the headlock attempt.

In this video I talk about the idea of aggression in BJJ and how it translates off the mat as well. The video was inspired by numerous questions from viewers who say that they either 1. Have too much aggression or 2. Have too little aggression. Most of them speak in the context of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but also comment on how this has translated over to their life off the mat.
Whether you’re too aggressive or not enough I believe Brazilian Jiujitsu training, as well as other combat sports, offers people a great chance to channel that warrior like energy. They can learn to release the pressure which many people say Jiu-jitsu does. But they can also learn to grow their ability to be firm and forceful should the situation call for it.
This ability to gain control over our mindset is one of the most useful parts of Bjj training.
If you’d like to read the blog article that I wrote which inspired this video use the link below.

Hope you enjoyed the video and if you have any thoughts on aggression in relation to your training or combat sports leave a comment.
Thanks for watching the video.

In December, I traveled to Mirco Wendt’s Academy, Monkey Gym Schwerte, to teach a 2 Day Seminar for just the Academy Students.
It was on Pressure & Control: two aspects of grappling and fighting that I feel are not really focused on or understood anymore.
This is how Mirco described it after:
Roy emphasized Jiu Jitsu is the art of control and not the art of Submission.
One of the main tools for control is pressure, so Roy covered the fundamentals for that kind of game, like proper weight placement, body misalignment, air restriction and more…
We were all amazed cause we we had never experienced that kind of pressure before. Great thing about that approach is, the top game player almost never used lots of strength or grips, instead it was absolute effortless to control the bottom person with correct alignment of the own body, misalignment of the opponents body and weight distribution.
What I as a plus 40 year old bjj hobbyist love about that kind of game is, you can play it as young gun, but also as a matured grappler over 40/50, because it doesn’t depend on attributes like strength or flexibility: everybody can do it.
Perfectly in relation to sustainability and longevity, great for self defense, competition or mma.
And, in a personal Message, he told me the immediate success he had with what he learned:
“Hey mate. We played with the “Pressure” game… it is so fantastic.
We rolled for control and I tapped the guys only with pressure and control and without Submissions ?
This happened never before although I am training for almost 10 years now. Thanks a lot for all the gold nuggets.
We really could up our games again after your seminar”
