One of the best early responses to a triangle choke attempt is a good, solid posture up. The hips drive forward, the back straightens and often the threat of the choke is destroyed in an instant.
That’s not the end of the battle for the finish though.
And recently, I realized that there was an opportunity there to punish opponents for doing a good thing. And in this video, you will learn exactly what I’m doing now.

#3 is MUST HAVE in the modern BJJ game
1. He runs = reap the knee and outside heel hook
2. He pressures forward = Reverse Entry to Honey Hole to Inside Heel Hook (think Oliver Taza)
3. He back steps = Entry to Backside 50/50 a la Lachlan Giles
4. He sits back and bases = kick the crap out of him and sweep to top position
Big shout out to Jonathan Hernandez for being my partner on this one. He runs the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu academy here in Cancun Mexico and he’s a super solid dude with great BJJ. Make sure you look him up to train if you’re ever in the area. We rolled for a long time and I’m very impressed.

Got a question today from Wade about when my BJJ game went to the next level and how I made that happen. He asks because he’s training hard but still struggling and is getting beat during training. He says he’s not getting discouraged, but he’d like to go from getting his butt kicked to doing some of the butt kicking.
In this video I share an idea about my mindset going into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu which is probably a bit counterintuitive. You see, most people tell you to visualize success and all of that. Early on, I had such low confidence in myself that I simply focused on training and didn’t set too many grand expectations. Sure I had dreams of being good at BJJ, but I didn’t really have expectations. This allowed me to be focused on the love of training and the day to day process rather than being obsessed with how things ended or worked out.
Along with this mindset I give some ideas that might be useful to you if you’re in Wade’s situation.
Hope the video is helpful, thanks for watching and I’ll talk to you next time.

This is usually the first attack I go for from the North South position. There are a million ways to finish the Kimura or to transition into backtakes, leglocks and armbars, so if you learn this setup it ends up being a very versatile hub position!

Today’s video is question from a BJJ White Belt who’s curious about when he should begin to take an active approach to his game or if he should just continue to show up and train. So in the video I share how I personally took an active approach pretty much from the beginning of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. I also share how I went about this process and got the most of it. This started with a DVD instructional set and me diving into Kimura’s.
I also share details on why the “just show up an train mentality” is the thing that holds everything in place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Hopefully the video will give you some ideas on how to approach your training and improve on the mats.
Thanks for watching.

The 2 on 1 is a powerful grip that allows for easy kuzushi (offbalancing), throwing, and transitions to groundwork. This comprehensive instructional includes 23 chapters of offense – teaching you how to set up the grip and throw or take down your opponent. These throws come from wrestling, Judo, and Sambo. No one is more qualified than Vlad to teach takedowns from so many different disciplines!
No instructional is complete without also giving you details on how to defend the position. In the next section, Vlad offers 6 chapters on stopping or countering when you get caught in the 2 on 1.
Finally we go to the ground. Vlad is just as talented on the ground as he is on his feet. 13 chapters are included in this section detailing how to sweep or submit your opponent when you have the 2 on 1 grip.

In this series I demonstrate a hip opener with some bonus movements that make the technique much more effective.
By incorporating multiple plane movements allows for a more complete and effective mobility exercises.
Then we combine the overhead reach which adds a component of trunk mobility which provides a more thorough and complete mobility exercise.
