How to Make a Grappling Dummy by Kristina Barlaan

Utilizing a grappling dummy is a great way to get a workout when partners aren’t available and also a great way to fine tune your technique.

A concept that I call “Cross lateral learning transference” is when you use one side of your body to teach the other side a skill or leaned movement pattern. Most people are not ambidextrous and have a preferred or dominant side that they use to do a particular technique. When practicing your techniques on a dummy, you have the time to analyze what your good side is doing and apply what you recognize towards teaching and/or improving your less dominant side. This takes practice and assumes you have already developed some degree of proficiency on one side of your body.

Counter That Kimura!

Cradle Attack Series – One Arm Anaconda!

Now for part 3 of my cradle attack series and I have saved one of my favourites until the last. This is a really neat little submission and I found it difficult to find the origin of the name. It’s kinda like a one arm Anaconda. But with a squish at the end? Anyway, whatever it’s called, it works. And I really enjoy this. Back Step Half Guard Pass!

This move, I ensure my white belts really understand and have an ability to apply during rolling before they move to blue. Being captured in half-guard is, of course, common and people develop multiple techniques for handling and still passing that great half guard player. But in my experience, when those techniques are struggling, then the back-step half guard pass comes into its own. This is a very effective and simple pass. And if you are a half-guard player.
