In this video I share a story for our friend who is a newer White Belt in BJJ who comes from Wrestling background.
This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart.
Here’s the situation!
Our friend Bashy says that he has been focusing on pulling Full Guard and working from that position in his gym to build up his weakness.
He says his takedown ability from Wrestling is solid. So to develop his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he has been focusing on the position that isn’t quite as natural to him.
He asked what I would tell him to do. But instead I took this video as a chance to tell him what I did.
So in the video I share my early stages in Brazilian Jiujitsu and how my Wrestling got me in trouble.
But then I talk about how I spent a while from the Guard position focusing on my sweeps and submissions and how it impacted me positively.
If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video is helpful!

In this video I break down the Bulldog Choke that’s used in MMA, BJJ and Grappling.
This video is based off a number of questions I received regarding the Robbie Lawler vs Ben Askren fight.
In this video I try to give some useful details about how the Bulldog Choke was used in that MMA fight, as well as the Carlos Newton vs Pat Miletich fight from back in an older UFC.
Here’s a short clip of the finish from the Carlos Newton fight: https://streamable.com/4ntv8
Later I show a setup that could be used for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is one of my preferred ways to setup the Bulldog Choke.
I figured this would give you a little bit of how the choke works and at the same time how you might be able to use it during BJJ training.
If you wanted to know more about using the Bulldog Choke in Brazilian Jiujitsu or how it’s worked in MMA then I hope this video was useful to you!

Today’s video is about the Lockdown in BJJ which can be an effective position to use but can also be a knee ripper.
Today’s question comes from a guy who had his knee tweaked from the Lockdown during his BJJ training.
I also share a story about how back in the day after the Eddie Bravo vs Royler (number 2) match my students were really interested in the position.
So I showed lock down. And within about a month one guy ended up injuring two teammates.
With that said, I wanted to use this video as a way to help someone in Brazilian Jiujitsu understand how to escape or counter the position so that they don’t get their knee injured.
And also, I share the idea that if you use lockdown. You want to use it with a technical aim. Not simply cranking people’s legs and knees. Use the technique to get to a better spot.
So if you’re having trouble dealing with or escaping the lockdown. I hope this technique is useful!

If you’re an older guy in your BJJ gym (30+ years old) do you get discouraged because the younger people in your gym are able to get good so fast?
Our friend Nelson sent in a question regarding this situation.
Basically he is training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and getting bummed out because the younger grapplers in his gym are getting good so fast.
He’s also bummed by the fact that he will never be a world champion competitor.
He’s to the point where he’s wondering. . . “is it even worth it?”
In this video I talk about a couple of the differences I see between olders and younger grapplers.
I compare them both from my experience as a younger guy who started Brazilian Jiujitsu. But also as a coach who sees the struggles of my older students.
When you watch the video, I hope you take away the idea that you don’t want to judge yourself and your experience solely based upon the experiences.
As I talk about in the video. If I was focused on just being the best competitor only and got discouraged because I’m not the best. I would have missed my own unique experiences.
I hope the video is helpful if you’re an older person in BJJ and struggling with a similar situation.

Being able to break the Guard in BJJ is an essential skill. But it’s a task that is not always the easiest, depending on the guard player on the bottom.
In this video I got a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Tom who wanted to see a Guard Break from the standing position.
I have about 3-4 that I will regularly use.
In this video I show the “chair sit” variation to break open the legs.
The idea is simple. We work our way up to the standing position. And from there we position or knees and legs in a way that creates a massive amount of pressure on the hips to pry the legs open.
Now, as is true with every move, it’s not full proof. You have to keep a lot of control on the legs. Because as soon as the legs open up the person can trap your legs if you’re not careful.
So in the BJJ standing guard break video I show you what to do if that happens.
If you’re having trouble breaking the guard then I hope this standing break is useful for you!

I’ve received a lot of questions. Not necessarily related to BJJ. But they come from people who follow me through Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The question they ask is about producing content through videos, blogs, podcast, etc.
In this video I share a story from a recent email I sent out.
It was a story related to a guy who came and did a private lesson with me.
You can receive my Monday – Friday email by going to this link:
http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/
During our BJJ private lesson we rolled, broke down his game and then talked for a while after.
While we were talking we discussed a situation he was in related to a potential business he was thinking about getting into.
In regards to the business he says that content creation is a part of it and wanted some tips.
In this video I share a tip that I found useful in relation to my own content creation when it comes to writing blogs, making videos, podcast, etc.
It’s nothing new or magical. But I think it’s helpful. Because people seem to be focused on what they think people want to see rather than moving from a place of genuine enthusiasm.
Not a BJJ question. But I hope it’s useful to you!
