In today’s video I show narrated roll with one of my White Belts during one of my no gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes. I did this video in response to some messages I’ve received about doing a narrated roll and also about how I “take it easy” on some of my White Belts during rolling. This video will give you an example of how I like to roll with many of my less experienced training partners.
In the video you’ll see me exchanging movement with John. While I do roll really hard sometimes and give no space, I find that this type of rolling has a lot of benefits.
1. It allows me a chance to practice moves, techniques and ideas in live situations during BJJ training without the threat of being destroyed if I make a mistake.
2. It allows my partner with less experience to engage and try their own techniques out.
3. By focusing on constantly moving I improve my scrambling ability and even my cardio for rolling.
4. Another side benefit is that from a coaching stand point I get to feel what my students are up to and what could be useful to teach them in the future.
Over the years it’s valuable to learn how to shift your mindset and physical aggression into different gears. If you’ve watch my rolls in competition then you know I can “turn it on” when needed. But I don’t need to access that level of aggression everyday.
I hope that whether you’re new or more experienced that this video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching!

In this rolling video you’ll see my student’s get the better of me several times. Which I’m pretty happy about. During this particular BJJ training class we did a lot of situational rolling. Some rounds start with us having the kimura already locked in place, we did some passing guard vs sweeping rounds and ended with some full rounds.
I was personally hunting kimruas for this class as you’ll see me diving and rolling for kimuras from all kinds of funky positions. I’m trying to improve my ability to catch them in weird spots to boost my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu submissions.
I think my favorite moment of this training session happened @1:09 where one of my guys Matt has been trying to work on his takedowns. He’s already a monster from the guard using triangle chokes and that sort of thing. But his takedowns have always needed a little bit of work. Along with some Judo practice he’s also been drilling some shots. And during our roll at that point in the video he hit me with a beautiful double leg.
If you watch the video you’ll see me goofing around and then Matt plows right into me followed by me laughing. I think I called him a jerk with the happiest tone possible.
Hope you enjoyed this video! Thanks for watching.

If you have a brand new White Belt in your gym, should smash them or let them work a bit? What if the new person got up after you were done rolling and began to brag about beating you or your inability to beat them? This is the question from one of our friends who ran into this situation recently with his BJJ training at his gym.
He says that a new White Belt came into his gym and during his roll he took it easy on the guy. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a tough sport and so he wanted to help the guy out. Well after the roll the new White Belt gets up and sort of brags about him not being able to beat him.
Frustrated, our friend is wondering. . . do you just smash every single new person that comes into do Brazilian Jiujitsu or do you do something else?
In this video I explain what myself and some of my coaches refer to the “Rich-Rule” and how it’s effective for curtailing that kind of negative behavior on the mat. I also discuss how I was very similar to the beginner who bragged. Well I would have never bragged about it. But I would have definitely thought I was better than I really was. Because I didn’t understand the reality of training till my coaches showed me that they could submit me every second, but could also take it easy on me and play.
Hopefully the video is useful to you. Thanks for watching.

Rory Van Vliet demonstrates how to do the leg drag pass giving you both the theory behind the pass and the actual steps to do it the most efficient way. This is from https://www.grapplearts.com/guardretention, the newest instructional from Grapplearts in which Rory and Stephan Kesting show you how to systematically shut down and counter all the most powerful and most popular guard passes your opponents will use to try and pass your guard.
In today’s video we talk about using “illegal submissions” inside your BJJ gym. Now when we say illegal what we mean is illegal in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. Our friend asks this because recently he’s found that he’s been successful using a few moves that aren’t allowed in Jiu-jitsu competitions and he’s wondering if he should continue to use them or not.
In the video I stress that I personally don’t want to be dependent on any type of technique. Whether it’s illegal, a gi specific move, no gi specific move, etc. I want my BJJ to be transferable to a fight, competition or rolling situation. Not just one or the other.
Also, competitions vary in what is legal and illegal so it’s hard to say 1 technique or another is illegal.
If you’re in a similar situation with using techniques that are illegal or just frowned upon then hopefully this video makes sense.
Thanks for watching!

Here is a short highlight video from the recent IBJJF Nashville Open where I won my Super Heavy Division and the Open Weight at Master 1 Black Belt. During these BJJ matches you’ll see me battling mostly with guard passing. I did have one takedown battle but the rest were fights in the passing positions.
If you watch my videos or have purchased my grip fighting series you’ll notice a lot of the stuff I teach and preach being used in the competition.
During the tournament I was only able to snag 1 submission. The rest of the competitors stopped my attempts so I won on points.
Each one of my opponents was tough in his own way and I’m happy I was able to come out on top and snag the wins for myself, my Derby City MMA team and the Team Shawn Hammonds Association.
I want to end this message with this. Much respect to all of the other Black Belts I competed against as they’re gym owners or instructors at gyms. It takes a lot of guts to get out and compete when you have eyes on you like that. So I have mad respect for all of them.
Hope you guys enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

Getting smashed in half guard when your opponent has the cross face and underhook sucks! Here are 3 of my favorite responses to this situation, including 1) the Kamikaze Sweep, 2) the Butterfly Lift, and 3) the Twist Sweep.
Each of these techniques has an aggressive option ending in a sweep where you get to the top, and a less aggressive option where you use the threat of the sweep to re-establish a good guard position. You can also chain these threats together making it extremely difficult for your opponent to hold you down.
