Today’s video comes from a guy who has a match coming up against someone with better takedowns than him who has beaten him once before.
He’s looking on some ideas on how to get the win against the competitor in their upcoming BJJ superfight.
In the video I’ll talk about the challenge he faces, which many big people in BJJ face. Which is, he likes playing top game but has bad takedowns. His gym also doesn’t do much standing work either.
The video will outline one of the best competition styles for Jiu-jitsu for someone with these sorts of issues.
Below are the resources talked about in the video.

Today I’m going to show you guys a move I’ve used a few times in BJJ competitions.
It’s a pretty unusual move, but it’s effective, nonetheless. This one will catch your opponents off guard if you do it right.
I’m showing this in the Gi as a reaction to the Collar Choke, but it also works well in No-Gi BJJ/Grappling too. Just focus on having some sort of choke threat.
I hit this at IBJJF pans in 2013.
Most people don’t expect to get submitted as they’re escaping the back, but that’s why I love this one so much.
If you’re looking to name it, this is what I’d call it: The Reverse keylock from back mount.
This clip was from my annual Costa Rica BJJ camp. If you’d like to attend, just check out the link below:

The back is the most dominant position in BJJ and you DON’T want to lose it when you get here. Here’s how to reset the position if your opponent starts escaping so you can dominate and submit him from the back.

What’s up guys,
today we’ve got a question from a 16-year-old boy who wants to do his first MMA fight.
He’s been training kickboxing for about 10 years and recently started BJJ.
The young man says he needs to prove something to himself, so he wants to try a Mixed Martial Arts fight out.
He passes this idea by his mom and she is not too keen on the idea. She does not want him to fight and this clearly does not make the young man happy.
He sends a message asking what he can do to convince his mother to allow it.
Honestly, there’s probably nothing you’re going to do to convince a mother to allow you to fight. It’s natural. Even my own mother hated watching my MMA fights, let alone my Wrestling or Jiu-Jitsu matches.
Now, what I would say is this:
It’s not the time for you to fight yet. There are pros and cons to doing it, but there will always be time to do it. Take that time. Develop your skills, get older/stronger, get more competition experience in Kick Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, etc.
I’ll dive deeper into why you should take your time a bit more in the video above and give you a couple ideas to chew on.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!

Today we’ve got a question from a BJJ Black Belt in his late 30s, Bob, who was training with another Black Belt, who was in his early 20s.
While they were rolling at Jiu-Jitsu practice the Young, competitive, Black Belt caught Bob in an Arm Bar.
As Bob was working to defend, the Young Black Belt tried his hardest to break the grip with 20 seconds left, and all of a sudden Bob tore his peck.
Now, Bob needs surgery & it will be 8-12 months before he’s back on the mats.
He wants to know what my perspective on the situation is, if he should be pissed at the young Black Belt, etc.
In this video, I’ll address this “safe submission” in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that got Bob injured & dive into why I would not call it “safe”.
I’ll also give you guys a training tip that will make you a better finisher in competition & help you keep your training partners healthy when you finish submissions.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!
