Got a question today from Wade about when my BJJ game went to the next level and how I made that happen. He asks because he’s training hard but still struggling and is getting beat during training. He says he’s not getting discouraged, but he’d like to go from getting his butt kicked to doing some of the butt kicking.
In this video I share an idea about my mindset going into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu which is probably a bit counterintuitive. You see, most people tell you to visualize success and all of that. Early on, I had such low confidence in myself that I simply focused on training and didn’t set too many grand expectations. Sure I had dreams of being good at BJJ, but I didn’t really have expectations. This allowed me to be focused on the love of training and the day to day process rather than being obsessed with how things ended or worked out.
Along with this mindset I give some ideas that might be useful to you if you’re in Wade’s situation.
Hope the video is helpful, thanks for watching and I’ll talk to you next time.

Today’s video is question from a BJJ White Belt who’s curious about when he should begin to take an active approach to his game or if he should just continue to show up and train. So in the video I share how I personally took an active approach pretty much from the beginning of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. I also share how I went about this process and got the most of it. This started with a DVD instructional set and me diving into Kimura’s.
I also share details on why the “just show up an train mentality” is the thing that holds everything in place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Hopefully the video will give you some ideas on how to approach your training and improve on the mats.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s Q&A video I answer a question from a BJJ White Belt who is struggling with a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training, especially early on. Right now he says that he knows the names of the techniques and mentally can wrap his head around everything. But the problem is during rolling or when it’s time to actually practice the techniques his body can’t seem to do the technique.
So in this video I share why this is such a common problem and how as you get more experience it will flip. Eventually the mind will be catching up to the body.
I also share an analogy where I find the situation similar to driving a car where most of the things you do are automatic because you’ve done it so much.
I also share a common strategy used by high level practitioners that BJJ White Belts and beginners in grappling can use to sharpen their abilities.
If you’re a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or just struggling with using techniques during training then I hope the ideas in the video are useful.

Today’s rolling video comes from a trip to Indiana BJJ Academy in Indianapolis. While I was there rolling we got some great rolls in and managed to get some clips from the action.
During the rolls you’ll see me trying a number of different techniques over and over again testing them out with different styles and body types.
Hope you enjoy the rolling and maybe get something from it for your own training.
