Today’s video is all about Cross Collar chokes in the gi and the small details that make them work in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
This technique video is partly an attempted to help my newer White Belt and Blue Belt BJJ practitioners. But also an attempt to share some useful details on making collar chokes (like the X choke) work from Guard.
You see for a long time with my Jiu-jitsu training I just didn’t have much success with collar chokes. I just figured they “weren’t my thing” or however you want to word it. But after picking up some small adjustments on the wrist, holding times and gripping the collar. Now I’m much more successful with collar chokes during rolling.
Hopefully the video will be useful to you and your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Winning the grip battle from guard is incredibly important because you get your preferred grip then you can attack and your opponent can’t pass your guard. In this drill from https://www.grapplearts.com/gripfighting (The Gripfighting and Kuzushi Formula) Rob Biernacki teaches and then demonstrates the ‘Engagement Phase Game’ (starting at 3:27). This drill is taxing but will take your gripfighting abilities to the next level.
Today’s rolling video is a primarily focused on me using a mixture of back takes and armbars.
In particular you’ll see the shotgun armbar used as well as some of the rolling back takes I’ve used in competition recently. If you watch you’ll also see me fail with the shotgun armbar and have to switch to other options.
Hope you enjoy the video and that it sparks some ideas for you and your training.

Will BJJ training get you ripped? That’s the basic question from our buddy Brandon. He said he’s been thinking about getting into BJJ primarily because he was to lose a few pounds.
He’s seen where a lot of people get in shape with the “gentle art” and was wondering if it would help him in his quest to get abs that he can wash his clothes on in a pinch.
I’ll confess the last part was my own addition. . .
To answer Brandon’s question and maybe yours if you were curious about the same thing. The answer is a big resounding no.
Simply put. Diet is the building block that your performance and health is based upon. And when it comes down to losing weight it boils down to calories in and calories out.
In the video I’ll talk more about how Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can help you lose weight but how it’s not the only thing that’s needed if you want to lose weight and get leaner.

In today’s video I go through my gym bag and show you the things I bring with me to BJJ training. This video is in response to a lot of questions I’ve gotten from a lot of White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu who are curious about what they should bring with them to training.
I include the normal stuff that you’re probably familiar with. But I also include a few things thats maybe you don’t know about or didn’t think of.
If you see me talk about the Stnky bag in the video and want to check it out. Look them up at https://stnky.us/ and use the promo code Chewjitsu at checkout for a discount.

When people are playing from the guard it’s WAY too common that they just let their opponents get whatever grip they want. Once they’ve given the other guy the grips they’re now on the defensive and have to fight out of whatever passing position they end up in.
That’s why the first thing you should do when you end up in the guard is to gripfight like crazy. Whoever dominates the grips is probably going to dominate the match.
Conceding the initial grip is a HUGE mistake, because gripfighting is the cheatcode for dominating the guard. There’s just no other skill that gives you as much bang for your buck in jiu-jitsu as gripfighing.
Gripfighting is something that everyone at the elite level does. It determines world championships but the skill itself is rarely taught in jiu-jitsu class.
Getting good at establishing your preferred grip is the secret to dominating bigger guys. Some gymbro might bench 300 lbs, but if he can’t get a good grip on you with his hands then he won’t be able to use all that strength to manhandle you.
Also gripfighting is an almost perfect way to prevent guard passes because if you get dominant grips then you control the match and can shut down almost all of the other guy’s offense.
But many people are completely lost when it comes to gripfighting. They just don’t know what to do first, what to do second, and what positions are best.
Like I said, this isn’t often taught in class, which is why Rob Biernacki and I made an entire instructional about it.
In The Gripfighting and Kuzushi Formula (https://www.grapplearts.com/gripfighting) you’ll learn step-by-step gameplans to break your opponent’s grips and get dominant grips of your own.
These are proven sequences and strategies to control your opponent, set up your offence, and win the guard battle in both gi and no gi.
This new instructional will be incredibly useful for you, comes at a reduced introductory price, is 100% guaranteed, and right now it comes with a ton of extra material.
