Today’s video comes from Elijah who wants information about books on mental toughness. He said he knows I’m a reader and wants book recommendations on books to develop mental toughness for BJJ and life.
In this video I share some ideas on how I develop mental toughness for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and life. I also share why you don’t build mental toughness from reading. Books can be a great tool to get new ideas from. But they’re like techniques. You have to put the ideas into practice. They can’t sit on the shelf. But with that I share 3 books I think are worth reading in relationship to mental toughness.
If mental toughness and being gritty is something you’re trying to do. I hope the video is useful to you.

Jon Thomas breaks down how to do the BJJ hip bump sweep, when to use it, and how to connect it to other attacks. This is an excerpt from The Closed Guard System https://www.grapplearts.com/closedguard
How to actually successfully choke someone out with the cross collar choke from closed guard. Excerpt from https://www.grapplearts.com/closedguard The Closed Guard System, a step-by-step formula for developing a KILLER closed guard by Jon Thomas!
Two of the keys that Jon demonstrates in this video include getting your first grip in at the right angle, and then genuinely attacking with other attacks (sweeps, armbars, triangle chokes, etc) so that he breaks his defensive arm structure and gives you that opening to sink your second grip into position. I think this approach will allow you to finish a LOT more people with this classic choke.
“I want to get better in BJJ.” I get a messages like this from new White Belts all the time. But when I ask people what they mean by “better” they typically don’t have a rock solid answer. So in this video I wanted to give someone who’s newer to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some ideas to focus on in order to get better.
The most important part is know what you’re focusing on. Most of the time when people say better they don’t define what they actually mean. So that’s probably the most important part. If you’re going to strive to get better you need to know what you mean.
But if you’re a newer White Belt I hope the video is useful.

How to go from closed guard to X guard and from there directly into 3 different attacks! From the newly released Closed Guard System, available at https://www.grapplearts.com/closedguard
Today’s BJJ technique video comes from a question about how to escape side control from a heavier opponent who’s squeezing tight. Before I get into the video I just gotta say. Learning to escape a heavier opponent starts by training with heavier people and learning not to freak out. Sounds too simple of course. But it’s super difficult.
With that said, this escape from a traditional head and arm side control seen in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will work whether the person is heavier or smaller.
The key to the escape is to get the person off balance. And honestly that is what the main focus of this video is about. How to off balance the top person so we can escape their side control.
Hope the video is useful.

When it comes to adding a new position to your BJJ game. There’s a basic three step process I use that works like a charm.Granted, theres always going to be a lot of trial and error. But that’s the currency you pay for the techniques and new position in the future, right?
The process I use to add new options into my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu style is similar to building a home.
You start with finding the right land (getting to the position itself).
Next you build the structure of the home. Foundation, walls, etc. The things that hold everything together (being able to hold the position effectively).
The last part is the décor and furniture that you put in the home itself. Without the furniture and décor your home has no purpose (adding the techniques, sweeps, submissions, etc to the position).
I’ll explain more in the video but hopefully this gives you some ideas to think about when adding new options into your game.
Hope the video was useful.

In today’s video I answer a question about a BJJ White Belt who’s worried about being a 1 trick pony. Basically he’s been using a particular set of attacks from a position recently and it’s been working for him. But he’s worried about relying too much on this 1 area of his game.
In the video I’ll explain why it’s not a bad idea to be a 1 trick pony in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. . . at least at 1st.
This comes from years of experience and watching students develop their skills on the mats. And 1 common characteristic is that many of the good ones develop a particular area of their game over the rest 1st, and then work on the other ones.
Hopefully the video is useful to you.
