Should I Train Today or Not?
This video is about a few different things, including 1) How to figure out when you SHOULDN’T train, 2) How to get your butt on the mat or into the gym on those days when you’re not feeling motivated, and 3) A story about how I ended up peeing blood after a training session I really shouldn’t have attended.
Hope this is useful to someone out there!
My Stinkiest MMA Fight, Memorable Moments in BJJ and New Diet – Random Questions
I recently posted on the Chewjitsu Facebook and Instagram about random questions people had. Fun, silly, personal, etc. They could be related to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or not.
There were literally hundreds of questions so I might make a few videos off of them.
I chose some that were interesting, useful or just questions that I had funny stories to share from my BJJ and MMA career. My favorite story in this video is probably about my stinkiest moment in MMA.
Here are the BJJ / MMA / Personal questions that were chosen . . .
– Did you ever NOT bath to get the upper hand on your opponent for competitions?
– Any best advice?
– Should Jiu-jitsu be in the olympics?
– Pre Match Ritual
– What do you do when you’re not motivated to train?
– Why do you practice Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ? (Short and Sweet)
– You look leaner, did your performance suffer during weight loss?
– Most Memorable Moment in BJJ ?
– Do you think you can defeat Master Ken using Ameri-Do-Te techniques in a street fight ?
– Do I whisper into people’s ear when I roll with training partners?
Hope you enjoyed hearing some of the stories and seeing the questions people asked.
Again, not the usual Brazilian Jiujitsu advice or tips. But they’re fun none the less.

The ‘Pump Action Shotgun’ Butterfly Sweep
This is one of my favorite ways to make the butterfly guard sweep more powerful and deal with someone who is using base and agility to not get swept. Here’s the link to the fundamental butterfly guard sweep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aH8aNK08ds and if you’re interested in the butterfly guard then you should. check out this playlist here in which I share many of my best tips and tricks for the position: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPVTmG22ZxE&list=PLyknAhj6gPvJLUJ6sMrbqbUfItYgyNaCf

1 Surefire Way to Ruin A Child’s BJJ Experience
You’ll notice the tinge of anger in this video because of the nature of the subject.
The question I received was concerning parents who seems to be a bit to aggressive with their presence on the mat. In the situation our friend describes. He says that some parents are jumping on the mat to record video, cheering for their children during rolling, etc.
I’m not positive I did a good job of answering his question.
But in the video I focus on the idea that I believe parent’s of kids in the BJJ class should not be allowed to coach or really have much interaction with their kids during the action of class.
1 reason for this is that if the kids inside the Brazilian Jiujitsu class is focused on their parent’s instead of their coaches and training. It steals their attention and robs them of the potential they have.
The even more insidious issue is that it often transforms the experience for the child from a positive one to a negative one.
So my advice in the video is that parent’s should not coach their kids during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes. And if you are a BJJ coach. That should be one of the rules I would stick to with the classes.
Thanks!

11 Year Old Kids Becomes BJJ No Gi Pan and World Champ as a Teen
I received a question from a 14 year old who is interested in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. But he’s not sure if he should start training. He says this because when he went into a local BJJ gym. He was the only teenager training.
Jeff (his name), asked if he should keep training Brazilian Jiujitsu, even if he is the only teenager in his gym.
In the video response to this BJJ question. I tell a short story about an 11 year old kid who began training at our gym when I was a Purple Belt.
I go on to talk about how this 11 year old was originally somewhat ignored during classes. Because at the time we didn’t offer a Kids BJJ program. It just wasn’t something we offered. But as he showed his dedication and desire to train. Everyone took notice.
This same person would eventually go on to win the No Gi Pans and No Gi Worlds as a teenager.
This was of course about my good friend Chad Hardy.

How to Setup a 1 Hour BJJ Training Session from Home / Open Mat
Can you train yourself effectively in BJJ from home or with open mats?
While I am always a proponent for training with a teacher, someone who has more knowledge than you do, it can still be beneficial to supplement your BJJ training with work from home or with a partner during an open mat.
Our friend Mike from the U.K said that he and his friend who is a fellow Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner are only able to make the gym 1-2 days a week max.
So because of this he was wondering if there would be a benefit to doing some Brazilian Jiujitsu training from home with his buddy, and if there are any tips I could give.
In this video I outline a basic 1 hour (active time) BJJ drilling and training session. Focused on specific areas with BJJ techniques that someone already knows. It starts with drilling then situational rolling.
I also add in one of the most common mistakes I see people make when they come into the gym or get together for a drilling session at home. The mistake I talk about will eat away at the potential time for good purposeful work.
So if you’re planning on drilling or training from home. I hope this video is useful to you!

Shopping for BJJ Suit Rolling 2017 (And Chewy Plays with Kids Toys)
In preparation for this years BJJ Suit Rolling, I took my annual trip to the local goodwill to look for ridiculous get up.
If you’re not familiar with suit rolling go check out my older video which is absolutely ridiculous.
This is a ridiculous tradition myself and my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team have. It’s fun and we have a great time. Most people probably look at it and think, “why on earth?” and honestly, it’s hard to give anyone a clear answer.
That said, we have a great time, it’s all in good humor and for us, that’s all that matters.
So I know this is not my normal Brazilian Jiujitsu style video. But I hope you have a good time watching the funny things that took place in the goodwill as well as the upcoming suit rolling video. 🙂
