Lost a BJJ Match I Should Have Won (Painful Mistake)
Have you ever lost a BJJ match that you feel like you should have won?
You may not agree with that mindset or outlook. But many competitors have been there before.
The question today comes from a BJJ Blue Belt who recently lost a match that he felt he was capable of winning.
He says he felt like he should have won because he was more experienced than the other person and several of his other Brazilian Jiu-jitsu teammates had defeated him as well.
Now this is a problem in itself. But the bigger issue for our friend Nathan is that he has a big BJJ competition coming up and needs help bouncing back from this loss.
In this video I discuss getting over a bad tournament performance so that you can bounce back to winning.
The biggest problem I see is that our friend was working the competition before his match and wasn’t able to properly prepare to compete.
If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video is useful.

Why BJJ Competitions Can Slow Your BJJ Learning
Can competitions hurt your overall learning in BJJ? Can being in the competitive focused mindset hinder your ability to take on new techniques and add them to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?
This is the question I received from Mike who’s a BJJ White Belt.
He said he’s preparing for his 1st BJJ competition and he’s wondering if getting into the more competitive mindset will hurt his BJJ learning.
In this video I 1st touch on what happens when you get into a competitive mindset vs a more relaxed mindset. And how it changes the way we learn and take in information.
Then I talk about how this will affect our BJJ training and learning.
The last section of the video I talk about how you need a little bit of both. And how each mindset or approach has it’s own benefits.
You need to be able to train and be relaxed. But you also need the ability to be sharp with your techniques.
If you’ve ever wondered the same thing or if you find yourself suffering from not being competitive enough or not being relaxed enough during BJJ training then I hope the video is useful to you!
Talk to you guys next time.

This is a Devastating Position for BJJ and MMA
What’s the most dominant position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? In my humble opinion. I think it’s Back Mount.
Even more so I think the most dominant variation of Back Mount is when we have the person flattened out on their belly with our hooks in.
In a fight the person is literally helpless. And in BJJ whether it’s training in the gym or competitions we can attack aggressively for the choke.
In this video I answer a question for Mckenzie who is having trouble finishing from the Belly down back mount.
I show 2 different ways to approach finishing from this devastating position.
With both positions I show how to finish the rear choke. But I also talk about how the position could be used for a fight or match.
If you’re having a similar problem with your Back Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Particularly when you find yourself in the belly down position. Then I hope the video is helpful!
Talk to you guys next time.

Aggressively Use BJJ Submissions WITHOUT Hurting Your Partners
How do you balance aggression with caution to keep your partners safe? What I mean is, how do you go for it, but make sure your BJJ training partner doesn’t get hurt?
This is the question I got from our White Belt friend. He got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because he feels like he is a push over. And so he is wanting to the develop the ability to be aggressive and physically confident.
But during his BJJ training he gets nervous about finishing the submission. He’s worried he’s going to overdo it and cause his partner to get injured.
In this video I share a simple method that most of us do naturally. But with some conscious effort. You can speed the process up a bit.
Basically you’re going to increase your ability to “feel” the movement by being more focused on it during drilling in your classes.
Meaning, when you go into your classes and during drilling. You want to take time to really focus on the feeling of the submission at it’s end range.
This way when you are rolling. You can be super aggressive and go hard during the roll. But at the point where you’re applying the armbar, choke or leg lock you can cut off the gas.
This will keep your training partners safe without during the Brazilian Jiujitsu without losing your aggression.

A Handful of Techniques Made me Effective as a BJJ White Belt
Everyone who’s trained BJJ has probably at some point experienced technique overload.
You know what the is right? It’s where you have so many techniques that you don’t even know where to start focusing.
I think this is an especially big issue with White Belts in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
Our friend Sean ran into this overload issue while looking up BJJ techniques.
He said he was looking up De La Riva techniques and there was just so many different techniques and positions that he was just lost.
In this video I talk about the approach of two BJJ White Belts. 1 was myself and the other was a friend of mine who trained with me for several years.
As White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu we had 2 different approaches. My friend focused on more techniques and had a TON of different techniques.
These two different approaches showed themselves pretty quickly.
When we would roll the two approaches clashed and 1 of us got the better of the rolling.
Watch the video to check it out! 🙂

Bjj Brown Belt Disagrees about Goals and Chasing Medals
Recently I got a text message from my friend up in northern Kentucky about chasing medals and setting goals.
In a recent video I eluded to the idea that I think it’s not always the best idea to fixate on goals too much.
He sent me a message telling me that goals are what push him. In fact, he’s at Brown Belt and the fact that he is pushing it to win a medal is causing him to train harder than ever.
This video is a response to that.
Personally I think goals are great. I set them everyday. I have short term goals, long term goals. All that stuff. And they help make my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu better as well as help give direction in my life.
But you cannot fixate on goals too much. Because not matter what you achieve. You’re always going to want more.
You’re going to want to be better. Whether this is BJJ or some other aspect of your life.
So set goals. Both for Brazilian Jiujitsu and your life. But just remember that you’re going to slip and fall from time to time and you’ll have to dust yourself off and get back after it.

Building Up Self Confidence with Grappling and MMA
Today’s question from Selena is about self confidence. It pertains to her training BJJ for the 1st time. But she lacks confidence overall and would like to change that.
In this video I come from the perspective of someone who had no confidence when they were younger.
If you’ve watched my videos then you know that in high school I lacked confidence and it wasn’t until I continually trained in Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that I pulled myself out of it.
And I talk about the process and how you’re not necessarily born with self confidence. But instead you build it up like a muscle.
I talk about going from an overweight high schooler who couldn’t even talk to people to becoming a professional MMA fighter who talks to thousands of people through a camera.
The biggest idea I try to share in this video is that self confidence doesn’t mean you aren’t nervous or that you don’t have fears.
Confidence in yourself, whether BJJ or otherwise, is having those anxieties and fears but knowing that you can take care of it, that you can deal with it and overcome it.
So if you someone struggling with confidence in yourself. Whether to start your 1st BJJ class or something else. I hope the video is helpful!

Are BJJ Schools are Doing it Wrong ? (Ben Askren Comments)
Recently I received a question on Youtube about an interview from the Joe Rogan podcast where Ben Askren commented about how BJJ gyms are doing it wrong.
Here is the snippet from the Joe Rogan Podcast with Ben Askren
BJJ Schools are Doing it Wrong: https://youtu.be/ijAMRqBZgo8
Here’s the full length interview: https://youtu.be/Ec4OKbrCl3I
During the interview he criticized Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training where very little focused was placed on deliberate training or situational rolling.
And instead Bjj classes often start with just a few slowly practiced techniques. Followed up with rolling from whatever position.
The 2nd question was about the necessity of BJJ Belts. Is our belt ranking system necessary?
In this video I answer both questions based on my experiences and touch on how I think a lot of gyms don’t practice as best as they could. Meaning, the implementation of various forms of rolling to get more experience from positions or with techniques that are being practiced.
I also go over my thoughts on Brazilian Jiujitsu belts and the motivation that comes from them.
I hope you enjoy the video!

Pass Deep Half Guard and Quarter Mount with 1 Technique
Quarter Mount and Deep Half Guard can be tough positions to deal with in BJJ. In this video I share 1 simple Leg Over technique to pass them.
In Quarter Mount, sometimes call Quarter Guard. Often times the only thing stoping you is their grip on your ankle. And in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu it can be tough to pry that foot out due to the strength of people’s thighs.
So the 1st option with this technique is against this.
In the second use for this technique. I show how to get to it from Deep Half Guard.
Deep Half Guard is another position to pass. Especially when someone gets under your hips.
By using the same Leg Over technique, it gives you another Guard passing option.
So if you’re struggling to pass the Deep Half or the Quarter Mount position in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I hope this technique is useful!
