Over Head Sweep
When your opponent stands up in the closed guard, there is a moment when you can force them to rely on you for their base. If your timing is right this sweep can be easy to hit.
Bear Traps Series Part 4: Bear Trap Sweep in the Gi
Bear Trap…. again…:( Well, just thought I’d throw one at you gi lovers. This is an exceptional way to use the trap with the help of the lapel to come up to turtle or a leg drag position if your opponent sits to their hip. Enjoy!

Shawn Williams Bear Trap Series Part 3: Bear Trap From De La Riva Guard
Here is a very interesting entry from the De La Riva (DLR) guard that leads you directly into the bear trap. Not quite as versatile as the bear trap from the bottom; however, this position can still lead to many attacking, passing, and defensive options. One major caveat however, it is absolutely critical that you keep the trap knee (in this case, my right knee) flared open to keep the integrity of the trap. You may elect to push your opponents DLR knee downwards to strengthen that flare. By chance, if your opponent does push that knee towards the floor (closing your knee), back stepping into a kneebar/ inside sankaku position is a great option with a little practice. This video is highlighting the entry only. Follow ups attacks can easily include heel hooks, toe holds, and leg drags to name a few 🙂

Shawn Williams Bear Trap Series Part 2: Bear Trap to Heel Hook
Here we see some of the versatility of the bear trap used as a method of control rather than simply a calf slicer. In this clip, the bear trap is used to control and off balance my uke and expose an extended near leg. There are many alternatives to end this sequence ranging anywhere from simply sweeping an opponent to getting into attacking alternatives such as demonstrated here with a simple heel hook. Which one is for you could be determined by several factors such as personality, rules of engagement, and skill set to name a few. The purpose of this video is not to dissect the finishing mechanics of the heel hook, but to highlight a strength of the trap. Enjoy!

Get Off The Ground With These 6 Techniques
This video offers 6 of the most common and difficult positions one might encounter in a fight when on the ground vs a striking opponent. These are the some of the best options I have learned and used in such situations.
This is a video for people who I often hear say things like “I just want to know enough to avoid or get off the ground in a fight.” I hear this a lot from people, primarily stand-up striking practitioners, regarding learning jiu-jitsu or wrestling. They don’t want to extensively train in grappling arts, and only want to learn those techniques that will help them avoid being taken down or help them get out of a ground grappling situation.
I don’t think anyone wants to be in a fight longer than they have to. I think even grapplers want to exist the grappling range (and fight all together) as soon as possible. But there are no shortcuts. These techniques from this video must be trained to a level of proficiency and drilled with intensity if they are ever expected to be performed in real-life encounters.
Train safely and smart. Thanks for watching and please like, subscribe and share.

Shawn Williams Bear Trap Series Part 1: Bear Trap Entry From Half Guard
Here is a simple technique that can drastically change your game. The bear trap can come from many different scenarios. In this video and often the easiest way to get to the trap, we look at the basic entry from a half butterfly hook. This is a fairly quick overview of the technique, If there is a desire in the comments, I can post a much more thorough version… just let me know 🙂 Enjoy!

Counter to the Knee Cut Pass
If your opponent gets past your kneeshield this is a good last minute option to escape the bottom and come up on top or create space to re-guard.
