While teaching an Instructor Certification Course we took a little tangent to explore this knee bar I have been hitting in training from a side control escape sequence. The reason I call this escape sequence “superior” isn’t that it is better than anyone else’s, but just that it is better than simply settling for replacing the guard as the primary option. It can also not only gain you the top position in many cases, but can lead to submission opportunities like this knee bar see here.

A lot of people argue it’s one or the other, I think that’s the wrong argument. They both can coexist. The sport application of jiu-jitsu was meant to develop the street capabilities.
When you should train and when you shouldn’t.
These few details have helped me tremendously over the years when using the elbow escape against a larger person.
I am working on a series of new Videos called “Mastering the Basics”
It will be broken into several different instructionals.
My focus will be on going into a lot of detail to make these fundamentals really work for you without having to use a lot of athleticism.
