The overhand right to single leg takedown is something we train and drill very regularly at Gracie Schwarzwald.
You can see how effective and damaging it can be in the first clip.
In fact, itβs one of the required techniques in the test for Blue Belt.
I often hear people say that Jiu-Jitsu isnβt useful for self-defense or βfor the streets.β
And, thatβs true. At most academies that only teach a small portion of Jiu-Jitsu.
But, we teach the complete Art at Gracie Schwarzwald because our focus is on giving our students all the tools they need in order to protect themselves.

Erkan recently suggested to me that we release a series of videos on Jiu-Jitsu from a more Self-Defense focused viewpoint.
Many people write to us and tell us they wish they could train with us since their Academies donβt ever really cover these topics so we thought weβd put out a series of videos so people could familiarize themselves not only with the techniques of a Self-Defense BJJ but also the mindset and tactics.
These will obviously not be deep dives into this subjects but they should give anyone interested in having a Jiu-Jitsu more focused and knowledgeable about dealing with real-life combative situations a good grounding.

I videoed a roll with my assistant, Erkan Mete.
In the roll, I utilise some of my most common techniques for controlling my opponent and fatiguing them.
I break down what I’m doing and why for you.
This is a small insight into what my pressure and control DVD will be about.

A viewer asked about how to open the closed guard.
I go over one way to do it and discuss how to approach the idea of opening and passing as well as some fallacies people have about it.
I am working on a Guard Passing Instructional that will go much more into depth on how to open guards (specific angles and pressures) but I think this is a good option to master.

Iss yuuuge honor for me to have Erkan Mete with me to help show how to escape the front headlock position while standing.
A viewer had asked me to cover this
Self Defense training is far more than just a series of headlock escapes. This is where many schools fail their students by not giving them the training in the non-technique aspects of a conflict – the ones that actually teach any Self Defense, that is.
One of the other big fallacies in most Martial Arts Self Defense training is that fights start at full aggression.
There is often a build up of aggression and to be effective in staying safe, you need to know how to manage the aggression (both verbally and physically) while attempting to de-escalate it.
This means understanding ranges and how they must be managed, as well as angles (two of the four things I always teach to control in any conflict).

Recently, I saw a video of a LEO engaged in a physical confrontation with a 15 year old boy.
He attempted to tackle the boy and was caught in a guillotine hold/choke. It was obvious he didn’t know how to escape and had to be rescued by his partner.
I discuss why it’s extremely important for Law Enforcement Officers to train Jiu-Jitsu. But, it’s very important that you choose a school with a strong focus on real world self defense.
We also cover how to escape this powerful hold, both standing and on the ground.
I now have a Patreon where I post videos from my Classes.

I was asked to discuss my thoughts on 3/4 mount – a position I actually use quite a bit. And, I discuss why here
