How has the leg drag changed? Let’s answer that with a more important question…

… Why did the leg drag HAVE to change?

Since the leg drag burst onto the scene last decade, taking the crown as one of the most utilized and effective catalysts to the guard pass, guard players everywhere have been working endlessly to destroy it.

And now, in 2020, the conventional leg drag position has been exposed as having 3 main weaknesses.

Those weaknesses being…

1. A strong De La Riva hook with a pant sleeve grip.
2. The hamstring strength of an opponent reluctant to let you drag the leg across the body.
3. Your opponent’s ability to counter, by passing their other leg over your body, stopping your advancements and opening up an opportunity to regain guard.

This video I discuss some of the mechanics and set up for the Meregali sweep, which is a variation of a deep lasso where you use your foot under your opponents tail bone to help off balance them for overhead sweeps. I show 3 of my favorite setups and some finish variations. Meregali was very effective at using this sweep over the last few years in competition and I have found it to be a highly effective addition in my game.
