This choke will put people to sleep for a couple of big reasons. Firstly, it’s just a solid and powerful choke from a mechanical standpoint. Secondly, it’s deceptive and usually most effective from “bad” positions. Be safe training with this one!

Attack Style Passing typically refers to threatening a submission in order to pass the guard. Sometimes this is higher risk than other times, but the effectiveness of this idea comes from the necessary response of the guard player creating space or opportunity in their reaction, allowing you to pass, potentially with a submission already working. A good guard should make the top player feel as if they’re navigating a minefield. They shouldn’t be able to defend without presenting an opportunity for a follow-up attack. Here we look at basic to intermediate straight arm attack strategies and subsequent chain attacks depending on how the defender responds.

There are several methods of escaping the mount, depending on weight distribution and other factors. If I had to choose one above all as the most effective mount escape that works in the most varied of conditions, with the most efficiency, it would be the kipping escape. Here are the details on this powerful escape from Mount.

Floating Pins, or Uki Gatame, are a category of pinning in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu that are versatile and powerful. This is due to the combination of stability and mobility they offer the top player. Knee on belly is probably the most famous example of this style of position, but other variations exist and are also very useful for eliciting submission opportunities. If you don’t have much of a background in wrestling or judo, or just suck in general at takedowns, this video should help. There is no substitute for putting in the work and really getting a formal, quality education in takedowns, but there are a few tips and tricks that help to expedite the process. This transition from defended arm bar to triangle is a popular combo, and these little details help with its success. Wedging the bicep and ratcheting the grip on the setup help to maintain control and cut out space needed to escape for the opponent.

There are several issues that can make finishing the Darce choke difficult for people. A common problem that individuals will state is having too short of arms, or similarly, their opponent is too thick in the shoulders and upper body.

The way we address Darce issues in this video is by, not only showing details for improving the execution of the strangle, but also showing alternatives to enhance or combine with Darce attempts and failures. We explore guillotine modifications, anaconda dilemmas and no gi baseball bat choke variations, for these reasons. Hope you enjoy!

Just because a move is low-percentage by itself, doesn’t mean it isn’t still a useful tool. Here is an example: this ham sandwich is a recovery from a shallow saddle entry, and it can also set up a pass to leg drag position. So don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to ostensibly low-percentage submissions.

The triangle is one of the most powerful submissions in all of grappling. Initially, you learn the triangle from closed guard, but then as time goes by, you see opportunities for it from many other positions. Eventually, once you understand the essential elements of the triangle, you begin to see how modified versions of it can happen from the side, back, mount, etc. In this video, I show some less typical applications of modified triangles, which are very effective.
