Understanding how to set up no gi chokes is an invaluable skill that every grappler needs in their arsenal. Whether gi or no gi, sport, mma, self defense, etc. these chokes are powerful tools. In my opinion, on of the most useful and versatile positions from which to gain a comprehensive understanding of how these chokes work is the turtle position. This position may be the result of a scramble or sprawl, and occurs frequently in a variety of contexts.

The 10-finger guillotine, the anaconda, the Darce, the Peruvian necktie, the arm-in guillotine and the bulldog choke are the focus of this particular video. Hopefully, these are useful for you, whether they are new concepts or new details on old concepts. Thanks again for watching!

When I first started learning the Butterfly Guard, I used to make myself so tired! I was using my legs all wrong and I didn’t understand the idea of off-balancing (Kuzushi) at all. As I gained more experience and began to study the games of BJJ champions such as Marcelo Garcia, Braulio Estima and Jean Jacques Machado, the beauty and efficiency of the position started to come to me.
In this video, I break down a really simple, basic Butterfly Sweep. This technique is fundamental to understanding how the Butterfly Hooks are supposed to be applied in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system, the Butterfly Guard can often look quite different. Besides there being no gi to grab, there’s also the idea of lineage at play. Our Butterfly Guard is generally passed down to Eddie Bravo from Jean Jacques Machado, one of the great Butterfly players in Jiu Jitsu history. As such, there’s a huge emphasis on overhooks and using the body to control the opponent rather than gi grips.
Beyond that, the Butterfly Guard is the perfect launching pad for all of the best submissions from Rubber Guard. My favorites from here include the Flying Kung Fu to Go Go Clinch, and the standard Gogoplata. Triangle Choke is always around the corner, too.

This video takes a look at what I refer to as fraternal twin techniques: no gi moves that are closely to gi moves. The examples I focus on comparing in this video are the Anaconda Choke with Kata-Ha Jime; the Darce Choke with the Brabo Choke; and the Peruvian Necktie with the Gerbi Choke. There are lots of examples besides these, and not only submissions but sweeps and escapes too. Hope you like it!

Just calm down…”Anti-Fundamentals” is just a way of saying these violate a lot of fundamental principles we are taught as rules about positions and submissions. These are definitely not go-to subs and they are inherently dangerous, but they are also very sneaky and unexpected. These also make some great Hail Marys for when you’re losing or have lost position and you are desperate. Hope you like them!

Whether it’s gi or no-gi, it’s important to tie sequences of techniques together. It doesn’t have to be a complicated highlight-reel combo, but there definitely needs to be a step two and three to your step one… Check out the video below to see multiple-time ADCC and World Champion Andre Galvao show a slick knee cut directly to d’arce choke!

Some excellent details for applying and finishing the Peruvian Necktie & The Darce Choke, powerful chokes that should be part of your arsenal whether gi, no gi, mma, sport, etc. While I was up in Alberta visiting Drew Weatherhead (the mastermind behind @because_jitsu) I got to experience some great training and hospitality. I also picked up some great details on techniques I have been using for years, but now have some tweaks to make them even more effective. This video shows some of those details behind the Darce Choke and the Peruvian Necktie.
Let me know what your experience with these submissions is, as well as others you like to pair them with. If you want to see more from Drew check out of course @because_jitsu on Instagram as well as his academy account at @Central_Alberta_BJJ.
