Attack Style Passing typically refers to threatening a submission in order to pass the guard. Sometimes this is higher risk than other times, but the effectiveness of this idea comes from the necessary response of the guard player creating space or opportunity in their reaction, allowing you to pass, potentially with a submission already working. Here are some of my favorite examples.

Floating Pins, or Uki Gatame, are a category of pinning in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu that are versatile and powerful. This is due to the combination of stability and mobility they offer the top player. Knee on belly is probably the most famous example of this style of position, but other variations exist and are also very useful for eliciting submission opportunities. In this video, I cover examples including triangles, darce chokes, arm locks, leg attacks and more. Hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

Today I’ve got a question from Max, who says he keeps getting caught in the Anaconda Choke in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The Anaconda choke is a choke that starts from the front headlock, usually after some sort of snap down or fail shot attempt by the bottom man (the person defending the attack).
In this video I’ll talk about some pretty basic defense to this choke & even show a counter that comes from Wrestling that can work pretty well in BJJ too.
This counter, if done properly, will put you into a good/dominant position in the roll/match after you successfully perform the technique.

The D’Arce Choke (also known as the ‘No Gi Brabo Choke’) is a great submission to tap your opponent out when you’re in his half guard and he’s trying to take your back. The Diving Guillotine is great for at least three reasons:
1. It is a standalone submission opportunity in itself.
2. It is unexpected when entered into as a diving pass
3. It combines well to link into other chokes and front headlock attacks.

The front headlock is inherently a controlling position that possibly even turn into a submission opportunity. Knowing how to defend and counter this hold is crucial in grappling of all styles.
