Nasty and super simple entry and finish for a ham sandwich. This one comes from the opponent’s de la Riva and gives us an opportunity for this awesome compression submission from the top. This and much more on my @bjj.fanatics instructional “Compression Locks: Slicers & Sandwiches.”

The Ham Sandwich is a compression style submission that has been around a long time, but like many submissions, it waxes and wanes in popularity. I think this is partially because of the trends in guard passing styles, which would explain a lot. In this video, I show some of the setups, entries and finishing details for this extremely useful and efficient submission, as well as what distinguishes it from the calf slicer it is commonly mistaken for.

Here’s a fun little “Ninja Tip” a leg lace compression lock from half guard. This works really well on partners about your size or a little bigger. My experience has been that compression locks don’t work as well on much bigger opponents. Regardless, it’ a fun little move that will surely catch them off guard! -Happy Training!
