Known by many names like the Wilson pass, the Tozi pass, and the Chim pass, the Sao Paolo pass is one that I first tried to add to my arsenal back when I was a blue belt.
I ran into all kinds of difficulties with it, but over the years, I came back to it time and time again with new adjustments, but recently I stumbled on one that may just change everything for the better.
It’s just a small difference in grip placement that I learned from a video that Leo Nogueira did on the topic in a video with Bernardo Faria.
And this video delved is into exactly what that adjustment is and why it matters.

Staying safe in the closed guard is hard. There’s all kinds of threats like cross chokes, scissor sweeps, and kimuras just to name a few. These simple rules for white belts can help though.

Once you get the overhook in closed guard, the first battle you have to fight is for angle, and that can be lost at times. If that happens, though, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it might lead to some offensive possibilities like this bad boy right here. Give it a try.

This video I go over the details to a tight triangle finish as well as some of the most common mistakes I see people make when trying to apply the triangle. Having a strong finish is very important not only because it actually finishes the match but psychologically I find when you trust your finishes you are more likely to be very aggressive going for them. I cover countering vs the stack counter, the leg pull to side counter, and the arm behind back counter. Hope you like the video, please comment if you have questions. This video I go through some of my favorite ways of setting up the closed guard. The closed guard is one of the best positions in Jiu Jitsu for submissions control and catching your breath if you are tired. One problem most people have though is they are taught tons of attacks but no actual ways of setting up the position. In this video I go through some very practical set ups from standing, spider guard, De La Riva Guard, and Collar Sleeve Guard. Let me know if you guys have any questions. Thanks to my sponsor Vital Gear for helping support the channel.
