Part 2: Back-Up Arm Bar from closed guard. This secondary arm bar is a great option for an opponent who defends the first submission in this sequence by posturing up. Part 3 coming next.
This basic arm bar setup is a time-tested, solid method, and serves as the first part of a sequence I’ll be posting. It’s all about chaining submissions and moving from one to the next, so we will start here. Parts 2 and 3 coming soon on these short videos.
This arm wrap sequence has a ton of options from closed guard. From chokes to locks to sweeps to back takes. This is one of my favorite subs here, but you can check my video on Lots if Submissions from Closed Guard to see many more.
In today’s Bjj technique video I show you 4 fundamental full guard sweeps that every White Belt should learn as early as possible. I call them fundamental sweeps because they’re essential techniques that have useful movements which can be used in a myriad of positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I say that every BJJ White Belt should learn them early because they can be used to setup combos and other attacks that will serve them well until they’re a Black Belt.
For instance the scissor sweep is a good basic sweep that is great for learning to open your guard and progress to open guards later on in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The bump sweep is great as a sweep but also is incredibly effective off-balancing technique that can lead to lots of other options in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And each closed guard sweep in this video has the same qualities to it.
Hope the video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching.

How to actually successfully choke someone out with the cross collar choke from closed guard. Excerpt from https://www.grapplearts.com/closedguard The Closed Guard System, a step-by-step formula for developing a KILLER closed guard by Jon Thomas!
Two of the keys that Jon demonstrates in this video include getting your first grip in at the right angle, and then genuinely attacking with other attacks (sweeps, armbars, triangle chokes, etc) so that he breaks his defensive arm structure and gives you that opening to sink your second grip into position. I think this approach will allow you to finish a LOT more people with this classic choke.

To attack from the closed guard with sweeps and submissions you need to first need to off-balance your opponent with Kuzushi. This clip is from https://www.grapplearts.com/the-gripfighting-and-kuzushi-formula-with-rob-biernacki-and-stephan-kesting/ and shows you one of the best ways to disrupt his balance, his posture and his alignment in order to set up your own attack.
Without Kuzushi just deploying ‘a technique’ at your opponent from the closed guard is unlikely to work unless he’s a beginner. After all, every technique has a counter. But once his alignment is compromised then he’s much less able to prevent the sweep or submission. Kuzushi kills the counters.
Once he’s off balance with his alignment broken he’ll be much easier to deal with. He won’t be trying to pass your guard. He’ll be so off balance that all he’ll be thinking about is recovering his position.
His frantic reactions to get back into position actually give YOU the opportunity to launch your real attack.
There’s no such thing as magic in BJJ, but properly applied Kuzushi comes pretty close.
In The Gripfighting and Kuzushi Formula you’ll learn exactly how to apply kuzushi to triple the effectiveness of your guard in both gi and no gi, against both standing and kneeling opponents, and from both the closed and open guard.

The loop choke has been one of the strong attacks in my arsenal for several years, and I often think about different ways to disguise its setup. That’s why I started adding this entry in.
It’s as basic as basic can be, but it works. And the more threatening you are with the scissor sweep, the more likely it is that you will catch opponents with this loop choke.

A great triangle choke from guard no gi style
Keelan and I went to Elijah Carlton’s school up in Chattanooga TN (Southside Jiu Jitsu) and sat in on one of his classes. He taught an awesome open guard lesson, and then when he was done I HAD to get this triangle setup from him. He is so good at this.
Pay attention to the details here and I think this is gonna turn into one of your best triangle entries.
let me know what you think, and if you want to see my ENTIRE triangle course it’s here for only $9:

One of the best early responses to a triangle choke attempt is a good, solid posture up. The hips drive forward, the back straightens and often the threat of the choke is destroyed in an instant.
That’s not the end of the battle for the finish though.
And recently, I realized that there was an opportunity there to punish opponents for doing a good thing. And in this video, you will learn exactly what I’m doing now.
