Today’s video comes from a viewer in Europe who is a BJJ Blue Belt and as involved with a program where he will be helping teach police officers Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He said that they’ve done 1 class already and that many of the officers were receptive but some of them weren’t. His question to me is about tips on coaching these people.
In this video I share some ideas on teaching people Brazilian Jiujitsu that don’t want to learn it. I also share the idea of the 1st stage of learning Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or any martial art.
If you’re in a situation similar to Grabrielle then I hope the video is useful to you.
Thanks for watching.

Got a good question from Johnnie, a 25 year old grappler with dreams of opening his own gym someday and being able to compete with the best in the world.
When it comes to goals and dreams it’s similar to some of the fundamentals a buddy taught me when we were doing some long range shooting years ago.
In this video I share an analogy based on some fundamentals a friend told me with some long range shooting. I’m not an expert just for the record.
You’ll need to be in a stable position.
You’ll need sight alignment in your scope.
Follow through on your trigger so don’t jerk the rifle off target.
And in my experience it’s similar to long term goals.
I remember taking the leap into the gym biz-nass stuff at the age of 25. I spent 2 years getting out of any debt to put myself in a more stable position to withstand the chaos of quitting my well paying job.
I knew exactly what I wanted and everyday kept my sights and daily actions aligned with my clear target. Finally I followed through by doing what I had to do everyday and didn’t allow myself to get pulled off the target of my goals. And this formula worked great for me in helping me blow way past what I thought was even possible. It’s not fast, but most things worth while usually aren’t.
So for you Johnnie, I’d say this. Get the better job to put yourself and family into a more staple position. It’s your duty as a husband and father and duty comes first. The world needs strong men for their families. Next, keep your sights and actions focused on your long term goal. This means keep training and improving while not getting sucked into the rat race of buying the most expensive car or house you can afford.
Define what YOU want, not what society wants you to do.
Finally have follow through. Working, fathering and training will be exhausting. But if you keep your goal clearly in your sights you’ll remember why you’re doing this stuff.
And for any of you with long term goals or dreams wanting to do something similar I’d encourage you to do the same.
Thanks for watching!

In today’s video I’m going to show you a BJJ strategy or concept of using Guard Passing and Leg Locks today. This video was recorded several months ago after a conversation with one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students. During the chat I told him that most of my best leg lock submission setups come from Guard Passing situations.
That’s right, my best setups for things like heel hooks, toe holds, ankle locks, etc. All come from Guard Pass situations.
Here’s why. . .
In the video I explain how anytime an extremity moves away from the body it becomes weaker and more vulnerable. Well if you’re passing someone’s guard they’ll be forced to use their legs for retention of their guard. During this situation where their legs extend you can use this moment as a chance to attack the leg.
This is true for almost any position. For example if someone extends their arms you can armbar them.
Another idea that you can takeaway is that if we attack the persons legs they’ll feel threatened and pull their legs back making it easy to pass. So in essence leg locks and guard passing can work great in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.

Today’s question is from Santiago and his question is about adding Boxing into the mix with his BJJ training. But he has some questions about how to integrate them together. His main problem are time away from Brazilian Jiujitsu and he doesn’t want to get a concussion from Boxing training.
So in this video I share some information about how I worked Boxing into the mix during my days as an MMA fighter. This way you can see how a grappler could mix in striking based martial arts without getting hurt or suffering from excessive damage due to sparring.
If you’re thinking about adding in some Boxing or Kickboxing to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training then I hope this video is useful to you.
Thanks for watching.

Ever get pain in your arms from BJJ training or run out of steam with your grips during collar chokes? In this video I’m going to show you some simple exercises for BJJ grip training plus give you an idea of bringing balance to your forearm and hand muscles that can resolve some of the pain you could be experiencing. The exercise I show 1st in the video along with the balancing idea cleared up a lot of elbow tendonitis I dealt with a few years ago from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In addition to the balancing exercise I’m also going to show you a couple of weird strengthening exercises you can use to develop strength in areas. The movements I show are specific for collar chokes in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
So I hope this video is helpful and gives you some more ideas on how to train your grips rather than simply doing only curling exercises which can lead to more problems.
Thanks for watching the video!

Recently I got an email from one of the email readers about a video where BJJ was called mutilated. Basically a Gracie family member called the sport of BJJ and the way many gyms practice mutilated, incomplete and essentially said they were not as good as the traditional Gracie Jiu-jitsu style he learned.
Let me start by saying I have a deep sense of gratitude for the Gracie family. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have ever started training BJJ. But I think this criticism is a little off. Martial arts are a type of self expression that’s always evolving and changing.
Take for instance traditional Jujutsu which spawned Judo. Where Kano made changes to the training philosophy and focus for various reasons. Then Judoka went all over the world spreading Judo, doing challenge matches and also taught some Brazilians.
The Brazilians then modified the focus and created this thing called Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. When Masahiko Kimura faced Helio Gracie he wrote about the “soft mats” which lessened the damage of throws and the “Brazilian rules.”
Now the Gracies (and others) have spread BJJ around the world, just like Judo, and it’s evolving into something new just as all martial arts do. But there is no 1 governing body for BJJ like Judo and so it allows for much more creative expression but also steers away from direct control.
The cat is out of the bag so to speak and I think it’s a good thing.
So do I think BJJ and sport BJJ is a mutilated art? Not really. No more than Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is mutilated Judo or Judo mutilated Jujutsu. The world changes, things evolve and while it may not fit someone’s desires that’s just not how the world works.
Martial arts are ancient and will continue to evolve.
Thanks for watching the video.

Get the at-home workout guide at: https://www.chewjitsu.net/corona
In this at home workout we recorded I do 10 squats, 10 push ups, 10 burpees and 5 split squats to each leg. The workout took 20 minutes and required no extra equipment.
This is certainly no replacement for BJJ or solid weight lifting but if you just need a good sweat at home then give it a try.
Also included in the free at home guide is over 20 other workouts that you can throw into the mix along with some tips on dealing with a layoff from BJJ training.
Hope you and your family are healthy and safe. Stay strong and lets continue to make it through this thing together.

I got a question about different types of submissions that can be used from the Turtle position in BJJ. So in today’s video I show the tried and true Clock Choke. But as you’ll see in the video. I place a huge amount of importance on the 1st grip you acquire.
In this video I also clip in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu match I had back in 2017 where I used this principle. I got the finishing grip very quickly and while my body was moving all over the place I was still able to finish the choke at the end.
I wanted to show this because a lot of times people fail to recognize the importance of getting strong grips early on. They think about the choke, the finish but forget that strong grips setup the finish.
Hope this video is helpful to you!
