Recently one of my newer White Belts competed in a BJJ competition. And while he was competing he made a few blunders with his guard pulling. Par for the course when it comes to a newer competitor trying to hit a technique in the intensity of sport Jiu-Jitsu. What was funny though is as he won the match the people on the other team criticized his techniques because “it wouldn’t work on the streets.”
And this my friend is one of the most annoying things I hear people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu say about others who are competing in sport Jiu-Jitsu. Because of course, many sports moves won’t work in a self-defense situation or fight. That’s a given. But during a competition we aren’t in a street fight, we are involved in a sport Jiu-jitsu match.
I share my own ideas about the whole self-defense vs sport Jiu-Jitsu thing but I’d love to hear some of the things you hear said about Brazilian Jiujitsu (whether from other BJJ players or other martial arts).
So leave a comment with something people say about BJJ that make you just roll your eyes.
Leave your comments down below and I’ll chime in and chat with you.

Today’s no gi BJJ rolling video comes from when Chad came to the gym the last time. During the rolls you’ll see my Black Belt Chad hit a nice mixture of leg locks, guard passing and back attacks. A lot of the guys were excited to roll with him since it’s been a while since he was at the gym last.
Something I always find interesting is how long Chad and I trained together (since he was a kid) and how different out Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu styles are. Maybe this is because of body type or maybe mindset. Either way we have 2 very different Jiu-jitsu styles.
At the end Chad and I roll (5:17 in the video). Spartan (the guy who edits the videos) decided to change the music and it made it seem like the boss fight at the end of a video game. Either way we basically roll to a stale mate until the very end. I couldn’t pass, he couldn’t catch me from the bottom and we both had a couple of “almost-but-not-quites.” If you were watching the video and wondered why it stopped after he was securing the Back Mount it’s because time ran out.
Hope the BJJ rolling video was entertaining and maybe gave you a few things to think about for your own training.
See you on the channel next time.

P.S I’ll be doing breakdowns of these rolls inside my Chewjitsu Vault: http://chewjitsu.net/vault and I may include one in the Youtube membership that you can check out for .99.

Today’s video is a fun one where Adam and I answer some of the comments that we received in the Youtube community section recently. Some of the questions are silly, some are serious. But either way I hope you enjoy the video.

Today’s Q&A comes from Victor who is a self-proclaimed mediocre Blue Belt and when he comes into his morning training sessions (which is when he trains), the mats are full of tough Purple Belts and up.
He says that because everyone is so tough he doesn’t get much success while training and he is finding he is getting discouraged with his training and has even thought about quitting.
He asks how to stay motivated in a situation like this where full on success is unlikely.
In the video I share some ideas on staying in the loop when you’re not able to “win” the matches which starts with redefining what success and winning looks like.
If you’re in a similar situation as Victor then I hope this video is useful.

Got a question today from Wade about when my BJJ game went to the next level and how I made that happen. He asks because he’s training hard but still struggling and is getting beat during training. He says he’s not getting discouraged, but he’d like to go from getting his butt kicked to doing some of the butt kicking.
In this video I share an idea about my mindset going into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu which is probably a bit counterintuitive. You see, most people tell you to visualize success and all of that. Early on, I had such low confidence in myself that I simply focused on training and didn’t set too many grand expectations. Sure I had dreams of being good at BJJ, but I didn’t really have expectations. This allowed me to be focused on the love of training and the day to day process rather than being obsessed with how things ended or worked out.
Along with this mindset I give some ideas that might be useful to you if you’re in Wade’s situation.
Hope the video is helpful, thanks for watching and I’ll talk to you next time.

Today’s video is question from a BJJ White Belt who’s curious about when he should begin to take an active approach to his game or if he should just continue to show up and train. So in the video I share how I personally took an active approach pretty much from the beginning of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. I also share how I went about this process and got the most of it. This started with a DVD instructional set and me diving into Kimura’s.
I also share details on why the “just show up an train mentality” is the thing that holds everything in place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Hopefully the video will give you some ideas on how to approach your training and improve on the mats.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s Q&A video I answer a question from a BJJ White Belt who is struggling with a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training, especially early on. Right now he says that he knows the names of the techniques and mentally can wrap his head around everything. But the problem is during rolling or when it’s time to actually practice the techniques his body can’t seem to do the technique.
So in this video I share why this is such a common problem and how as you get more experience it will flip. Eventually the mind will be catching up to the body.
I also share an analogy where I find the situation similar to driving a car where most of the things you do are automatic because you’ve done it so much.
I also share a common strategy used by high level practitioners that BJJ White Belts and beginners in grappling can use to sharpen their abilities.
If you’re a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or just struggling with using techniques during training then I hope the ideas in the video are useful.

Today’s rolling video comes from a trip to Indiana BJJ Academy in Indianapolis. While I was there rolling we got some great rolls in and managed to get some clips from the action.
During the rolls you’ll see me trying a number of different techniques over and over again testing them out with different styles and body types.
Hope you enjoy the rolling and maybe get something from it for your own training.

Today’s video is the highlights from the 2020 IBJJF No Gi Pans. During the video you’ll see me use the same BJJ techniques I teach on my youtube channel as well as my online courses. If you’re one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students, it’s also the same techniques I use in class during rolling on a regular basis.
One of the techniques I hit was the rolling back take in the 2nd match. I used the simple double under pass and then initiated a roll through to the Truck position (common in 10th Planet). In fact, some of the details in that technique I learned from my buddy Brandon who is a 10th Planet Black Belt. I was already using the Truck, but he gave me some super useful adjustments.
If you’re a student of BJJ and want another instructive lesson. Go back and watch some of my Chewjitsu Rolling videos on the channel. When you see them you’ll notice, again, I use a lot of the same stuff in those videos as I do in BJJ competitions.
You can also go back and watch some of my older matches and tournaments, and again you’ll see the same or similar BJJ techniques and positions being used.
Use this as a reminder that it takes time to perfect and sharpen techniques in your Jiujitsu game.
Anyways, hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

After my video Monday talking about my 1st place performance at the 2020 IBJJF No Gi Pans in Atlanta. I started getting a lot of questions about my BJJ matches, breakdowns of those matches, etc.
So I figured I’d share a set of matches with you guys. As you’ll see these 2 matches have the same opponent but very different outcomes. Primarily because of a bit of a technical blunder on my part which you’ll see in the match.
In the video I’ll both lightly breakdown the rolling and also share some insights into what I was feeling, before, during and after the matches.
If you’d like more in depth breakdowns like this. Roll on over to my website and sign up for my Chewjitsu Vault: https://www.chewjitsu.net/vault
or

And hopefully this was entertaining and informative for your own Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training, competition or rolling.

I’m back from the IBJJF No Gi Pans (2020). Another gold medal to add to the collection and another bundle of experience and stories. I’m now a No Gi Pans champion in 3 different weight classes (Heavy, Super Heavy, Ultra Heavy) which is kind of cool.
Let’s get rolling with a Jiu-jitsu story that was both good and sort of bad.
On Saturday the IBJJF had the Atlanta Open and one of my White Belts competed in the division. In his first match he went against a guy named Jonathan who ended up beating him 2-0. Well this Jonathan fella went on to win the whole division. And after the matches were all over Jon comes up to me and tells me how much the videos have helped him.
BUT, he also did something even better, he flashed me a printed copy of his own BJJ gameplan.
I’ll talk more about it in the video but I guess this is what happens when you give away so much free information like I do, right?
Now, even if you’re not planning on competing. Understanding your game by drawing it out as a flow chart (like I show in my guide) is helpful for knowing how to be assertive with your game.
If you’d to get your hands on the Free BJJ game plan guide then roll on over to the link below:

Hope you’re healthy, strong and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
