World NoGi history! Who remembers this awesome back and forth open class semifinal match between Gordon Ryan and Patrick Gaudio from the 2018 World NoGi? In today’s video I share an idea about the 2 BJJ belts that seem to cause imposter syndrome and anxiety more than any other belts. You may disagree with this, but from my almost 20 years of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and speaking with thousands of people online it’s what seems to be the truth.

I share this because one of our viewers was recently promoted to Purple Belt and says she is experiencing imposter syndrome and a bunch of anxiety.

So in the video I share how I’ve dealt with imposter syndrome in the past with both Purple Belt and Black Belt and give some ideas on how to deal with it.

Today’s question comes from a BJJ practitioner who’s been involved with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for over 15 years. He asks if my game ever feels like trash. Meaning, do I have days where I feel off and even like I’m getting worse.

The 2nd part of the question concerns a basic BJJ technique that everyone knows but yet this Brown Belt struggles using during rolling.

So in the video I answer his questions and share a story of how I struggled using a very simple sweep that everyone learns early on in BJJ as a Black Belt. I also share how I improved in this weak area of my Jiu-jitsu game and how you can do the same with a simple idea on mental framing and preparation.

Today’s BJJ technique video is with my student and 3X NAIA national champ in wrestling, Brandon. In the video shows a beautiful takedown setup you can use in wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It’s also crazy simple. The trick is that you’re going to have to drill it because it requires good timing.

What I like about this setup for BJJ is that it’s perfect for countering some of those pushing and collar tie exchanges that happen in BJJ where someone ties up but never shoots.

I’m currently drilling this setup and adding it into the mix and I hope the technique finds it’s way into your game too.

In today’s Q&A BJJ video I answer the question as to whether or not you can take Brazilian Jiu-jitsu too seriously. I think this question comes up because people take a lot of things too seriously in our society at times. We’re all guilty of it. Plus, people experience burn out in a ton of things as well.

So it’s a good question I could chat about for hours. But in the video, I focus on 1 specific idea I think sums up when your training in BJJ crosses the line of “too serious.”

If you keep this element of play mixed into your BJJ I think it will help keep your growth going and also help you avoid burn out. I know it’s been this way for me over the last 20+ years in grappling.

Grip fighting in BJJ can be overwhelming at 1st. There are lots of grips and knowing which ones to fight for can be difficult. In today’s video I have a question about this exact thing from a White Belt.

He says that when he’s training Jiu-jitsu in the gi he feels lost on which grips he should be fighting for. So in this video I share a simple idea that you can implement into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to make grip fighting simple.

This is my personal strategy on fighting for grips and when I lay it out, you’ll probably think of it as maybe too simple. But sit back and watch some of the best guys out there and notice that they don’t grip up casually. They grip up with intention for something very specific.

Practice this and you’ll experience a much higher success rate with your techniques, and you’ll never feel lost by which grips you should go for.
