Today’s video is going to feature Austin (IG: @badboymedicine) again!
Instead of focusing on takedowns for Jiu-Jitsu, this time we’re going to focus on what to do once we actually get on the ground, specifically with a focus on submissions once we get to the Half Guard position in BJJ or MMA.
We will explore a sequence from half guard in order to pass, pin, and submit your opponent off their back, with a specific focus on No-Gi grappling (of course most of this can be modified for the Gi too.)
Austin, a Judoka, asked specifically for submission sequences that come after a pin, so that’s what the focus on this video is going to cover.
We will also cover getting to mount, controlling the mount position, and submitting from there. This will include me teaching Austin some nuances such as passing from quarter mount, forcing my opponents to post on my knee to give up their arm, securing mount, and more.
It’s always fun seeing grapplers from different arts trying BJJ, so I hope you guys enjoyed this video as much as I did.
Hopefully, if you were struggling with the positions in this video, then you also found some useful tips that’ll help your game out too.
Thanks for watching!

What’s up guys, today we’ve got a question from a guy named Brian who has this idea that I think a lot of us in the martial arts world tend to hold.
Brian is getting ready to compete as a Blue Belt and he’s nervous.
He said he competed a little bit as a BJJ White Belt but didn’t feel great doing it.
He says he feels pretty dang good when he’s practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the gym, but when he gets out on the competition mats, the nerves take over.
Because of this, he feels like he always underperforms.
He says he’d like to get rid of the fear and asked if I had any tips to help out with that.
In this video I’ll try to share something with Brian that most fighters/grapplers come to terms with as far as competition goes, that actually SKYROCKETS your ability to compete, and it might surprise you.
Hopefully if you’re struggling with competition anxiety, then you found the ideas in this video helpful.

What’s up guys!
My buddy Austin (AKA @Badboymedicine on Instagram) was in town doing a seminar for my gym showing some Judo that you can use in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.
He wanted me to show him how I use that Arm Drag Inside trip (also known as the Kouchi Gake in Judo) and I wanted him to show how he set ups the Kouchi Gari as a foot trip.
So, that’s what we did.
This is a fun Takedown for Jiu-Jitsu video because although many takedowns from Wrestling and Judo are similar, there tend to be minor differences in details that, for whatever reason, were adapted for each particular sport.
Judo is often seen as a great takedown base in the Gi, but as Austin often displays on his Instagram, it can also be extremely effective in No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu situations too.
Hopefully you guys found this video helpful and learned a thing or two from it.
Once again you can find Austin on Instagram at @Badboymedicine for more content.
Thanks for watching!

ADULT / BLACK-BELT / MALE / FEATHER – FINAL
Today’s video is a clip from a recent episode of the Chewjitsu podcast with one of my Black Belt students Jeff.
In the clip he shares a story about how I denied him a Black Belt promotion that sent him on his way to reinventing his Jiu-jitsu game.
Almost a year later he competed at a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition and played a completely different game than he normally used to.
I also share why he was able to do this without having to train 6-7x a week.

Today I’ve got a question from a White Belt named Andy who has been hearing that the Keylock is not an effective submission for Jiu-Jitsu, especially at the higher belts.
So, he was wondering if the Keylock, or sometimes called the Americana, is even worth doing and if I could give him a couple of tips to improve his catching & finishing rate, cause he’s having trouble hitting it in his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym.
This submission was actually one of my favorite submissions as a BJJ White Belt and as I got more experience it became something more like a sneaky threat or a set up for other submissions or positions.
Regardless it’s still a very useful tool and I’ll give you guys 3 tips to make you key lock stronger, both as a White Belt or an experienced Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.
Hopefully if you were struggling to finish this submission or just found Jiu-Jitsu, then you found this helpful.
Thanks for watching!

What’s up guys, today’s video is a unique one as it comes from inside the podcast studio!
I got some questions from you guys these past weekend during the Chewjitsu Open, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition that I’ll be running all around the states.
This weekend’s Louisville tournament had a great turn out and I’m excited to meet more of you at the next one.
Anyways, on to the question.
During the comp, I was talking to several young competitors and one of the big issues is the nerves associated with competition.
A good example is a man named Nathan who competed at my tournament this weekend. He came to a seminar the following event and told me that he lost his first match and just felt shaky, weak, and just off.
But, those next 3 Jiu-Jitsu matches, he won!
He said that after that first match, which he felt bad, he felt great. This is pretty common.
A lot of people struggle with that first match. It can be hard to get that initial lunge blow in and calm the nerves until you’ve actually gone through a live situation.
So, how can you deal with those nerves before that first match?
Well, in this video I’ll get you 2 ideas to chew on that have helped me, and various students, perform to our potential during BJJ competitions.
Hopefully you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching!

So, today we’ve got a question from a Newly promoted Brown Belt, Evan, who is a hobbyist that finds himself having a case of the “Brown Belt Blues.”
Usually, you hear about the Blue Belt Blues, but today’s situation in a little different, or at least the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt color is.
He says that at his gym he’s at the appropriate belt level. But, when he goes online and starts looking at the people who are competing at the Blue/Purple/Brown Belt competitions, he just doesn’t think he’s at that level.
He obviously finds this disheartening.
Sometimes he finds that he has no idea what these lower belts are even doing when they compete and now, he’s suffering with a bit of imposter syndrome as a result of that.
He asks what I’d do to deal with the doubt of his rank in BJJ.
In this video I’ll give Evan, and you guys, 2 ideas to chew on. 1 idea you guys might not like much, but I’m sure the other will be reassuring for some of you.
Hopefully, if you’re struggling with a similar issue, then you found today’s video helpful.
Thanks for watching.
