Have you ever had a situation in your BJJ gym that freaked you out to the point where you were scared to train?
I can’t say that I have, but I have had certain situations during my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training that made it hard to do certain techniques.
Like the time I broke my nose when I went in for a takedown on the legs. My nose was broken in 3 places.
Afterwards anytime I was training BJJ I was gun shy about going for a takedown. Instead I would just pull Guard.
Overtime I was able to ease back into my takedowns and lower level shots for grappling by drilling them more and practicing with more experienced practitioners.
Eventually I was back to shooting on legs in hard training sessions and Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions.
I bring this up because I received a question from Gustavo, a BJJ White Belt, who was choked unconscious during his training and it really left an imprint on him.
He was fine afterwards. But the situation was somewhat traumatic and is really messing with his ability to train BJJ. Especially the rolling portion of class.

How do you adjust Takedowns and Half Guard when strikes are involved? This is the question I received from my buddy Fisk.
And this is a question a lot of people have. How does Brazilian Jiu-jitsu translate into a fight situation. Whether a street fight or self defense situation or an MMA fight.
In this video I go over the basics of how to use a take down from Wrestling or Brazilian Jiujitsu in a fight situation where strikes are involved.
The big keys are
1. Controlling the distance. Either being “In” or “Out” and not allowing yourself to be in optimal striking range for too long.
2. Urgency is needed. So when you go into the situation. Whether a takedown or a guard attack from the bottom. You have to really go for it with a sense of urgency.
3. Using strikes to cover your attack. So if I’m going for a takedown or some technique. I will use strikes to help set things up.
So big thanks to Fisk for the question. And if you maybe have a similar question. Then I hope the video was helpful to you!

In this video I sit down and answer questions with Eli Knight and Jared Jessup. Both of which are Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black belts under Royce Gracie.
You can find out more about these guys at the links below.

Here are the questions we answer:
1. How do Black Belts get stripes? (We also touch on their Blue Bars on their Black Belts)
2. What can you take away from BJJ for Self Defense even if they don’t focus on Self-Defense techniques all the time?
3. Should you accept a 2nd place medal if there were only 2 people in the tournament division.
4. How do you know what to teach in your BJJ classes and how to divide people up?
I hope that you enjoy the video and gain some cool perspectives from these knowledgeable and highly skilled Black Belts.
Jared and Eli come from different backgrounds in the BJJ community than I do. So it was fun talking and hearing out the various perspectives that they had on BJJ training and jiujitsu as a whole.

When stuck inside someone’s Full Guard in BJJ. What should you be going for? Breaking grips, passing, posture, etc?
This is the question that comes to us from Jordan Patricio who is having issues working out of Full Guard during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In this video I touch on the basic prioritization with grip breaking, posturing up and passing the Guard.
One of the big ideas I touch on in the video is the idea of dominating grips after their broken. This way it stops the person from reestablishing their grips again.
And the second big idea is to view the Full Guard as a bad position for the person on top. And as such. When you’re on top. Look at it as an escape situation instead of a offensive situation.
This mindset shift to breaking and passing the guard helped me to slow down in this position.
If you’re in these situations in BJJ. I hope this video is helpful.

I’ve only had 1 negative email ever sent to me about my grip fighting course.
I was told it was “too basic” for him.
I didn’t take it too personally. It works great for me and my student’s so I’m just sharing.
But funny enough.
On the very same day a friend of mine and fellow Black Belt sent me an email saying it was helping him and his students a ton in competitions.
1st email was from someone within their 1st couple of years of training.
The other was from someone who’s already dumped almost 20 years into BJJ.
The difference? The Black Belt knows that you can learn something everywhere. It’s a mindset focused on execution and personal responsibility.
There are 2 types of people when it comes to buying video courses.
The 1st group are Collectors.
They collect gis, dvds, books, etc expecting the item itself to make the difference.
Armed with all this they for some reason never get better. And instead of taking the personal responsibility for their game. They blame it on the item or video course itself.
They move on to the next series to buy hoping this will fix it.
This is why people buy a diet plan but somehow never lose weight.
The second group are Executors.
This group knows that the responsibility is on them. That no matter what they watch, read or learn. It’s on them to make it happen.
And make it happen they will!
They do this by mercilessly executing.
By taking in the information they are learning and putting it to practice. Drilling it. Showing it to others. And at the very least using it during rolling.
So whether we are talking about video courses like my “Basic” Grip Fighting Series 😉 (Click here to check it out)
Or even the techniques your coach shows you in class.
If you want a noticeable change. Put that information to use! Don’t just be a collector!
Talk to you guys next time!
