The Butterfly Guard can be a tough position to deal with if you’re a Guard Passer.
In a recent video where I was training with several tough Black Belts. I passed the Butterfly Guard.
In response to this video where I was passing. A lot of you were curious about how to stop the position.
In this video I show how to stop the sweeps and dismantle the Butterfly Guard position by a few specific adjustments.
The 1st being that I need to go to the opposite side that they are attacking. This will kill their position.
Next to hold them in a bad spot. I use my head as a post against their neck. This is a underutilized grip that does a great job of keeping people flat.
Using the head is such an underutilized grip for most people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
From there I talk about how to pass briefly. While I don’t dive into it too deeply. If you’re able to control position in BJJ. The sweeps, submissions and passes come much easier.
So if you’re struggling to pass butterfly guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Try the tips I include in this video to stop the effectiveness of the position.

What do I put in my gym bag for BJJ tournaments? I get this question pretty often.
But recently, there was a fun story from the IBJJF No Gi Pans which made me consider actually doing the video.
I was sitting in on the 1st day watching matches and a brown belt from Marcelo Garcia’s gym and I were talking. One of his teammates didn’t have the proper clothing to compete.
Jirel took out a spare set of shorts he had and handed them off to him. Then jokingly looked at me and said I should make a video on what to bring for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments.
While it was a joke, I think it was a great idea.
I know that many times there are so many questions for new competitors. So if I can share a few tips, why not.
In this video I share the stuff I bring with me to Brazilian Jiujitsu tournaments.
I include the gear I bring.
The food and supplements I bring or use.
And I also include the type of tools I use to warm up with prior to the match.
If you’ve got a BJJ competition or match coming up. Then I hope this video proves useful to you and gives you some ideas on the types of things you should bring with you for tournaments.
Thanks for watching and I hope the video was helpful.

Should you scout out your opponent for BJJ competitions or should you focus on your own gameplan?
And when preparing for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament does it change from White to Black Belt?
It’s different for everyone. But for me, I don’t like scouting out my opponents too much.
As I talk about in the video. When I went to BJJ competitions and focused too much on what my opponent was going to do. I didn’t execute my own game plan effectively.
And whenever I competed and didn’t have time to look people up. I was able to perform much better.
I will still glance at my opponent’s if I can, but only a glance. Just enough to know some of the techniques or strategy they may execute.
So if you’re like me. You might find it beneficial to not scout your opponents out too much and simply go in with a focus on your game plan, your techniques and jiu-jitsu abilities.
Hope the video is helpful!

Recently I posted a video of myself and some tough BJJ Black Belts rolling and training before the No Gi Pans.
There were several techniques used in the video that many of you had questions about.
So I’ll go through and answer the technique related questions you have about the roll.
In this video I cover one of the Guard passing back take combinations I used during the training.
It starts with a Double Under Pass variation and then moves into a rolling back take from the, often called, Truck position from 10th Planet.
You may not call it the Truck, but for the sake of the video, it’s what we’ll use.
I also share the progression of the move and where it came from. As I originally used the Truck position and the rolling back take from other positions like Mount and Turtle first.’
If you were interested in this technique from the previous video, or want a Guard passing back take chain of techniques. Than I hope this video is helpful.
Chew on that. 😉

Years ago I experienced a lot of pain in my lower back, groin and hips that would come and go. After trying different methods to fix it I realized it was a muscular imbalance issue.
In this video I show a few weird but useful exercises for BJJ practitioners.
In the beginning I talk a little about how Brazilian Jiu-jitsu creates an imbalance because of constant flexion in the hips from positions like Guard.
So the exercises that can be really helpful are those that do the opposite.
The 1st exercises are a prehab rehab type exercises that focus on extension muscles like the glutes.
I’ve done these with my students in the past and in some cases their muscles are so weak that twitching and cramping has happened.
Next I show how to add a little weight and get more strength in the positions using a barbell or something like a Wreck Bag.
If you’re experience any issues with your hips, groin or lower back in Brazilian Jiujitsu. You may find some benefit from working on hip extension exercises to correct the imbalance.
If you’re interested in any of the products listed. I’m not an affiliate of them. I just like them.
