Do you have plenty of techniques to escape Mount but yet you still have trouble escaping the position? If so then this video may be useful to you. In many cases it could be your setup and the sequence you use to execute your escape. In today’s BJJ technique video I show some details on escaping Mount with a focus on the strategy of it rather than just the technique itself. This should hopefully help you have a better understanding as to the “why” you’re doing what you’re doing in this Brazilian Jiujitsu position.
The basic sequence I show in the video looks something like this:
– Free the leg to have a bridge
– Bring hands together to setup frames and get inside control of the position
– Begin to setup mount escapes
This has made my escapes from Mount so much better and has also helped out many of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu student’s with their escapes from a tight Mount position as well.
If you’re struggling to escape Mount then I hope this video is useful to you.

I got a question from Operation Random on Youtube about coming back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training after a 3 month lay off. They say that they’re nervous about returning to their BJJ gym and starting their grappling training over again.
In this video I share a recent story about one of the Black Belts and Purple Belts in my gym who just returned. I share this because layoffs and experiencing some nervousness or anxiety about getting back into Brazilian Jiujitsu is not just a White Belt thing.
When we first start something new there is fear of the unknown. Later on the fear comes from our own expectations.
But either way the fear is imagined and generally the reality of the situation is better than the imagined fear.
If you’re getting back into BJJ after a bit of a lay off I hope this video is helpful to you!
Thanks for watching the video.

I got a question about how to do a Triangle Choke with inflexible hips. This is a situation that has come up numerous times with my students who do a lot of sitting and have very tight legs and hips. So in this video I cover a few tips to help for a better Triangle Choke in BJJ.
In the video I don’t talk about how to work around inflexible hips. Instead I talk about how to stretch out the muscles that are extra tight because I think you’re ignoring a problem if you don’t work on the muscles causing the problem.
These stretches could be used to loosen up your hips before Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training if you’re really tight, or used after class when you’re nice and warm to keep the muscles and joints loose. Overtime this will help to make it easier to do a triangle choke properly.
I hope this video is helpful if you’re in a similar situation
Thanks for watching.

In today’s video I show a fundamental submission series from Full Guard that I learned as a BJJ White Belt that was very helpful. The position I teach in this video has also been helpful to many of my students who are a bit on the bigger side.
The submission series starts from what I call from Diamond Guard. In it I show 4 submissions.
– Diamond Guard Armbar
– Regular Armbar
– Triangle Choke
– Oma Plata
I’ve also found that this series is really useful for bigger guys like me who don’t have super quick hips and legs.
Hope the video is useful. Thanks for watching.

I am working on a series of new Videos called “Mastering the Basics”
It will be broken into several different instructionals.
My focus will be on going into a lot of detail to make these fundamentals really work for you without having to use a lot of athleticism.
The ones I am working on are:
* Submissions
* Sweeps
* Takeodowns
* Submission Defense
* Positional Escapes
Here is a teaser technique from the takedown DVD.
Obviously, I will cover this in greater detail and connect it to other takedowns but it’s just a preview.
Do you ever have feelings of self doubt or inadequacy leading up to BJJ competitions? This is what today’s video is all about.
It’s from Andrew who says that anytime he signs up for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition or tournament he has these feelings of inadequacy where he feels like he isn’t good enough.
Now this is in complete opposition to what actually happens when he competes in matches. When he competes he wins his fair share of matches and has taken medals in several competitions.
In this video I share how through the experiences in Brazilian Jiujitsu we are essentially forging a new person. If we agree on the idea that the stories and experiences of our past shape who we “think” we are. Then by creating new experiences and stories we slowly change what we think.
I also talk about how in my personal experience and even that of my students, the image of our self and what is reality often aren’t matched up exactly. Usually as you’re improving yourself the image of yourself lags behind a bit until you create new stories and experiences to bring it up to speed.
If you’re in a similar experience to Andrew then I hope this is useful.
Thanks for watching.

In my opinion, these are the most important techniques for a White Belt in BJJ to know.
Every instructor has their priorities but for me, beginners in BJJ should focus the majority of their training on dealing with real world attacks and not on defeating other BJJ player’s attacks.
