Today’s Sunday video is about confidence from a young guy who sent in a message asking for some tips. He says that he is super confident when training but off the mats he lacks the same sort of self-confidence. He says he’s watched the videos and knows my stories and says that I look like I’m a confident guy and wants to know what I did.
I picked this video because I wasn’t always a confident person and I was very much the same way as Matt is. I was confident when I was doing BJJ but as soon as I stepped off the mat it was gone. And in the video I talk about how I changed this.
I also picked this video because recently one of my mentors and I were doing a rolling session and he was having some fun jokes at my expense talking about how I used to be super unconfident. So it’s a super fitting video for the week.
Hope the video is useful to you and thanks for watching.

In today’s BJJ technique video I show an effective fundamental sweep from Full Guard can work from White Belt to Black Belt. It’s also a sweep that has a ton of carry-over value to things like armbars, oma-platas and other techniques from closed guard. Lastly, it’s also a sweep for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, that if you get good at using it, can lead to lots of other sweeps and submissions.
That sweep is non other than the Pendulum Sweep and is right in line with things like Scissor Sweeps as Fundamentals all White Belts must have some understanding of. Now in this video I show the distinction I make between the Pendulum and the Flower sweep because they get mixed up. Now I’m not saying everyone in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu goes by the same names as I share in the video, but this is what I call them.
Anyways, I share some details on how to set it up, how to execute it and how to finish it that I hope are useful to you and your Jiu-jitsu.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s video I talk about getting ready for a BJJ competition. In particular getting ready for a Jiu-jitsu competition with a different ruleset. The question comes from Phillip who is getting ready for a competition with a rule set he’s not used to. He’s wondering should he roll under the same rules as the competition leading up to the tournament or should he just roll like normal and make adjustments on the day of the matches?
I’ll explain how I do it and how I prepare for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition regardless of the rules.
And if you’re getting ready for a BJJ match, tournament or competition then I hope it’s useful.

In today’s Q&A video I share 4 reasons why I’ve learned more at Black Belt than any other belt rank in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Some of the reasons will seem counterintuitive but hopefully it’ll make sense. And everyone of course has their own philosophy for BJJ, but these are the ideas that I think have made the biggest difference.
Oh and even if you’re not a Black Belt I think you can make use of the information in the video.
Thanks for watching.

In this BJJ technique video I share a simple idea on escaping side control when someone is super tight. I’m using the lapel to help (since it’s there) but you can use this same setup in no gi jiu-jitsu as well. Just make sure the bicep is across the face.
The big thing I really wanted to stress in this side control escape video is to be mindful of where you are pushing with your frames. Many beginners use their basic frames and push right into the power of the person on top. Meaning they push towards their legs and feet which means they get absolutely no where. But if we simply change the angle we’re pushing we can get a lot more mileage from our frames and bridges.
So if you’re getting stuck in side control when your doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu then I hope this video is helpful!

Today’s BJJ Q&A video is from Josh who’s a big guy who wants to move more like a “little” guy. I put that in air quotes because I know plenty of smaller BJJ practitioners who have great smash games. But getting back to his question he says that during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practices, his coach encourages him towards a more pressure and smash style game whereas he seems interested in a lot of open guards and other positions more commonly associated with smaller Brazilian Jiu jitsu players.
In this video I’ll explain why you want to have a big guy game and a little guy game (and how you can make that happen). I’ll also talk about why you should always keep in mind that your BJJ game is your own and you can create it however you’d like.
If you’re a big guy with a similar question I hope you enjoy the video.
