In today’s rolling video you’ll see 3 rounds from a BJJ rolling session.
00:00 Roll with Purple Belt (sweeps & kimura defense)
01:22 Play Leg Lock Round with White Belt
03:54 Roll with Black Belt (back and forth sweeps)
The 1st one is with one of my Purple Belts. When you watch the roll you’ll see a mixture of Butterfly and Half Guard being used. The next round is a playful leg lock round with one of my young White Belts. We had some fun scrambles and eventually I got the submission. The final round was with one of our Black Belts at the gym who has a crazy tough guard to pass. You’ll see him score a nice sweep on me and forced me to work my way back on top.
As always I hope you enjoy the video and get some ideas for your own Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Today’s question comes from Chris, a BJJ White Belt, who’s experiencing one of the most common problems new BJJ competitors run into when they compete early on.
He says that in the gym he’s a tough roll with any of the other White Belts, he can roll round after round in his gym and generally feels confident. But whenever he goes to BJJ competitions he’s not able to pull the trigger on his techniques, he gets tired in the 1st couple of minutes in the match, feels shaky and weak in his arms and legs and loses his matches.
Now I replied back to Chris about whether or not he put much attention to his warm up. He said he didn’t and so that’s where I place a lot of focus for this video. Because in my experience the warm up before a match can make or break your performance. And it’s something that experienced competitors pay close attention to while new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitors don’t.
Hope this video helps you if you’re in the same situation.

Setting up your frames to escape side control is something you were probably shown since you were a fresh new BJJ white belt. But what if doing that could get you in trouble?
Well, here today I’m going to show you a sneaky wrist lock that you can setup using the basic framing position most people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu were shown. Next week I’ll show you how to setup your frame differently.
This is a legit submission that I’ve used in many competitions and countless times in rolling. In fact one of my fastest submissions was hit using this technique.
So next time you’re in side control I hope this proves useful to you.

Is BJJ effective in MMA anymore? This is the guts of the question I got asked by Zinedine recently. So in this video I share some ideas to. . . chew on. . . as to whether or not I believe BJJ is still relevant in Mixed Martial Arts in todays current fighting arenas.
Some of this will probably be just basic “Duh” information. But this argument has been going on since I started training way back in 2003 (18 years ago). And apparently it’s still going. Which is strange to me because BJJ is still useful and effective.
The reality is that it’s just going to look different than it once did as all the martial arts are blending together.
So I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

P.S I meant Big Nog in the video not Little Nog. Not sure why I said that.
