Today’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.
Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.
On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.
So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.
Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

Today’s BJJ technique is one of my absolute favorite takedowns for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I demonstrate the technique in both gi and no gi.
One of the big reasons I love it so much is because many BJJ practitioners have a very passive and defensive stance with takedowns. Usually this is where their butt is waaaay back. This makes it hard for shots and takedowns.
So in today’s video I’ll show you how to do an arm drag to inside trip that I’ve been able to hit at just about every BJJ competition in the last 5 years. I also show more details and setups to this BJJ take down in my Wrestling for BJJ series which you can check out at the link below.

I personally love anything that works off the arm drag in BJJ since no matter the defensive posture. You can always get a grip somewhere on their arms.
Hope the takedown helps and thanks for the request Michael!

Today’s BJJ question comes from a young jacked guy who said he’s doing really well but experiencing a problem. That problem being that some of the guys he’s beating make excuses about his strength.
This is a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where people have been conditioned to believe that technique is all that matters. And then when they run into a strong or athletic person they realize it’s not the case. That strength and athleticism plays a huge role.
In the video I answer his question and address why his more experienced teammates are so frustrated. And why it’s more to do with the person than it is with him.
If you’re in a similar situation with your training partner then I hope this video helps!

I recently did a video title: 4 Full Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible. It was fairly popular and several people asked for some open guard sweeps as well.
So in today’s video I’m going to show you 5 different BJJ sweeps from 5 different open guards that even a beginner or White Belt can use. I say this because I learned all of these sweeps as a beginner. And I teach them to my students who are newer with lots of success. I can also say that I’ve used every one of these sweeps in rolling or competition against Black Belts as well. So they’re effective at any level.
Hopefully after watching you’ll have some extra ideas on open guard options in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Oh and if you’d like to watch the original video I did from full guard. You can check it out at the link below.

Today’s video question comes from a Blue Belt who recently moved to a new BJJ gym and doesn’t feel up to the standard of the new gym. His question to me was how to deal with the situation he’s facing.
In this video I give 3 different ideas as to what could be going on and as to why he doesn’t feel up to the standard of his new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym. And if you’re moving to a new gym hopefully the ideas are useful to you as well!

In a recent video I posted about tapping too early in BJJ. I did a poor job of explaining my ideas in detail. A lot of times I try to make the videos quick, snappy and easy to take in. But in some cases, longer detail is required for a nuanced situation.
In this video I reply to a few of the comments. But more importantly I explain in more detail my philosophy for using submissions in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. After watching the video you’ll get a clear understanding of my ideas on safety, injury prevention and training hard.
The original video is here: https://youtu.be/_7Eoj5qKSPc
Hope the video helps clear up the idea and add on to the previous video.

With 20+ years of grappling and competing you learn a few things.
And today I’m going to give you an important rule for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. Probably 1/3 of the questions I received revolve around some form this idea.
That rule is. . .
You must understand the paradox of BJJ progression.
Here’s what I mean.
On one hand you remove your dependency on the outcome. A lot of times this gets worded to something like trust the process or love the journey not the destination.
From personal experience. Detaching myself from the immediate outcome was one of the biggest breakthroughs I ever experienced in BJJ. It freed me from worry and allowed me to become more aggressive, creative and unafraid of “what ifs”.
Here’s the flipside to that.
You still have to recognize good performances and bad performances.Or perhaps you prefer well executed vs poorly executed techniques. When you fail you can’t simply dust it under the rug and ignore it to focus on the journey. You need to break it apart, dissect it and crack open the lessons to be learned from the experience.
It’s a balancing act.
You have to roll like failures don’t exist but objectively look at every failure with a magnifying glass.
And truly understanding this paradox is one of the key ingredients for having a good mindset for getting better at BJJ. At least in my furry faced opinion.

Today’s video is from one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes were I went over a couple of simple Guillotine choke counters. There are a lot of counters and defenses to the guillotine choke. But these are 2 of my bread and butter defenses that have served me well over the years in grappling.
The 1st one is the roll out which is executed from a full guard style position, The 2nd one is the hop over which is super useful when shooting in for a takedown.
The hop over is generally ideal while still moving (especially with takedowns) whereas the roll out is last moment counter when they get a good snag on your neck.
Hope these defenses are useful to you and your BJJ training.

Do Black Belts have bad days on the mat during BJJ training? This is the question I got from one of my White Belts in the gym and 1 of the followers who is a Purple Belt.
In the video I answer the obvious, which is YES, of course I have bad days. But I’ll explain why I have less bad days during my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and how I do that. Hopefully you can take an idea from the video to chew on for your own training.
Hope the video is helpful to you regardless of your current skill level in grappling.
