When it comes to side control escapes, I have recently shifted my mindset. Instead of approaching the task tactics (with more and better techniques), I now focus on the strategic goal of getting on my side then reinforcing that structure.
It aligns with a mantra I have had for a long time which is: the space I create must be mine to keep. And if I can be successful in achieving that goal of getting on my side with a strong structure, escape becomes almost effortless.
Case in point:
You can see one such example in this video.

I recently got a good question about how to develop the “If this, then that’ mentality and approach that many high level BJJ practitioners have with their styles. So, in the video I’ll give you some ideas to chew on about how to develop your own style and reach a relative level of competence or mastery with the positions or techniques in that style.
The ideas are very simple. But simple doesn’t mean they don’t work. After 23 years of grappling, it’s usually the simplest stuff that makes the biggest difference.
So hopefully if you have this kind of question for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu then I hope this video is useful to you!
Thanks for watching.

“BJJ shouldn’t be used in a street fight”, “BJJ Doesn’t work in street fights.” I see this kind of stuff in comments and online all the time. I’m sure if you’re a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner you see it all the time too.
In the video I just wanted to share a few ideas to Chew on when talking about BJJ, grappling and street fights.
I also respond to a comment I got recently where someone said, “you never want to go to the ground in a street fight.”
And after watching the video, feel free to share your own opinion, experience or ideas about BJJ in a fight situation.

In today’s BJJ video I’m going to show 1 of my favorite sweeping combinations that starts in a Half Guard or Half Butterfly Guard and then finishes in a Butterfly Guard Sweep. This was requested after 1 of my rolling videos was shown on the channel and my instagram.
It starts with 1 of my best Half Guard sweeps which you can look over in more detail here:
This combo shows why I love the giggler sweep so much. It allows you to off-balance someone and transition smoothly to other attacks.
Thanks for watching!

When I talk to a lot of you through videos I’m told that you don’t do much situational rolling or sparring and that you don’t get much drilling time.
Situational work is some of the most important in my book! It’s very difficult to develop the intuition and adjustments necessary if you’re not getting time in position.

Recently in one of my videos I touched on this idea of consistency with training partners, but I never finished it. In this video I wanted to touch on this idea about having consistent training partners and a home gym for your BJJ training.
This will also, hopefully, answer a question I’ve gotten asked by many people about whether or not they should train at multiple gyms or if they should have 1 main gym for their Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
So, in today’s BJJ Q&A style video I’ll share my thoughts on consistent training partners and hopefully give you a useful idea to chew on.
Thanks for watching!
