Today’s video question comes from a Brown Belt who’s hitting a sticky point in his game. To the point where he’s getting beaten by all the lower belts and he feels like he’s doing worse than ever.
We’ve all been there at some point.
One of the times in my BJJ when I felt like this was when I was training at a super tough gym as a Brown Belt. I was visiting and wanted to get some tough training. I got exactly what I wanted, but it was tough! I remember even the blue belts were killing me by the end of it.
So in the video I share some details about what happened and I also share some ideas on how I handle these things.
Also, if you want to get the ebook mentioned in the video, just use the link below.

Recently I got a question about whether you should drill 1 technique over and over again for thousands of reps or if you should do a sequence of techniques when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
In this video I’ll share how I like to drill and I’ll also give the question asker some ideas to chew on regarding takedowns for BJJ using the cross collar grip in the gi.
If you’d like to go deeper into the ideas of the BJJ takedowns shown, use the links below.

Today’s BJJ rolling video is from a recent class I taught at the gym. We’re going through some fundamental stuff related to takedowns in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and then had open rolling.
During the rolls I was looking for some very specific things with my guard passes, my side control defense and my Shotgun Armbar submission.
If you’d like to learn more about the shotgun armbar I have a free series here on youtube:
or you can check out the course I have that deep into the whole idea of side control submissions with a main focus of attacking the arms.

Having focus during your BJJ rolls is important, so I encourage you to give yourself a technical aim the next time you step on the mats.
Thanks for watching the video.

Today I decided to journal a bit during a training break, and wanted to discuss a conversation I had this weekend at the 1st Annual Chewjitsu Open.
So, the interesting conversation that popped up is one that I think could serve many of you guys in the BJJ community (or in life)
The idea is focused on my lack of expectations for this weekend’s tournament.
I got asked from a competitor out of Chicago “How did you NOT expect this thing to be huge? you have all these followers?!”
I told him something that may suprise you…
I didn’t set any expectations.
In this video I ‘ll dive deeper into how this form of thinking started and how it has helped me in BJJ, Business, and Life. And, hopefully how it can possibly help you out to.

Today’s question is about spazzy White Belts who are ripping submissions.
The question comes from Christian who is newer to BJJ, but his biggest worry is about rolling with other White Belts who finish submission too quickly.
He asked, “is this a valid concern? or is this something I need to get used to?”
Of course, White Belts are going to be a little spazzy, but this definitely IS a valid concern.
In this video I’ll explain to you how I’d approach training safely as a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu against other White Belts in BJJ, and how to train safely in general, regardless of belt rank.
Hopefully you find these Ideas useful for you.

Today’s question comes from Marshall, and MMA fighter, who sends me a message saying that his MMA coaches, BJJ coaches, etc., are talking him up and telling him that he has a toughness about him that most people don’t have naturally, that he’s very skilled, etc.
He says that he knows his coaches believe what they’re saying. The issue is this…
He doesn’t see it.
He asked me “How do you discover something about yourself that other see, but that you don’t necessarily see in yourself?”
In this video I go into a few stories about times in my life I felt like an imposter, and no matter what anyone told me I didn’t believe I had “IT”, just like Marshall.
If you’re feeling like Marshall, I’ll also give you a really simple way to “update” your identity a little faster, so that you can see what your coaches are seeing & so that you can develop a real superpower, SELF TRUST, that is often developed by going through certain tough situations whether that’s through training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, MMA Fighting, etc.
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video useful for you.

This morning I was talking to one of my Brown Belts, Tim, and he was telling me that this idea he adopted of “old man” Jiu-jitsu was getting in his way and creating some problems for him in training.
In my honest opinion, I believe that this idea of “Old Man” BJJ is a bit BS and even a bit restrictive.
This all comes from a recent story of this “older” Brown belt, Tim, rolling with one of our black belts, Mark, who has an insanely difficult guard to pass.
Tim felt like his “Old Man” BJJ style was not working against this specific type of guard. But, Eventually Tim breaks the rules and try’s some “Young Man” BJJ & a looser style of passing.
He stands up and he starts trying to pass side-to-side to get through the guard instead of smash passing low.
When Tim does this, he notices that he starts to get reactions out of the younger Black Belt, and although he couldn’t finish the pass, he felt like made a ton more progress in the roll.
In this video I’ll talk about the downside of putting a label on your BJJ as it relates to your age (like Tim did here), your weight, height, etc., and how far too often we rely on these labels to search for SIMPLE solutions to complex problems.

Today’s question comes from a Brown Belt in BJJ, named Aaron, who also comes from a Wrestling background, and apparently has injury plagued hands.
With that in mind, he says his favorite way to train BJJ is No-Gi.
Recently however, he decided that he wanted to pursue more Gi training, going up to his coach, letting him know about his injuries, and was looking for some grip fighting tips from his coach.
After the talk with his coach, Aaron says that his coach threw in a little dig. Saying:
“By the way, the Gi is more technical than No-Gi…”
Apparently, this led into a whole rant, and may have triggered Aaron a bit, who believes that both No-Gi and Gi are technical, just different.
He asks if I believe his instructor actually made a good point or not? and if I think that Gi is more technical than No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Here’s what I think…
