Today’s question comes from John, who says he’s having trouble doing the traditional Wrestling shot when he’s training at his BJJ gym.
He says what happens when he attempts a shot is that he essentially cannot get through the full range of motion without slamming his knee on the mats.
Obviously, this is a super painful thing, but he wants to get better at Wrestling, and he’s wondering if I’ve got any ideas on how to develop some more flexibility in order to start shooting takedowns in BJJ without so much pain.
With that being said, in this video I’ll answer John’s questions by giving you guys 2 stretches that will hopefully help you get a little more range of motion when shooting in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. These stretches have helped improve my range of motion with lifting and training so I hope they work for you.

Butterfly guard has the potential to be the best position to initiate sweeps, and it also a potentially target rich environment for setting up submissions and transitioning to other threatening positions. That’s the theme of this video. In this one, I show some options of what we can do from butterfly in order to attack the arms, transition into arm saddle, and attack the legs or take the back from X-Guard, all initiated from butterfly. I hope this helps your game!

Today we have a question from Jordan who asked:
“Chewy, what is the best way to learn from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructionals?”
This is a great question, as there are tons of BJJ instructionals out there in the Jiu-Jitsu world, and they can be useful if you know how to use them. They can also be overwhelming if you’re not sure how to use them.
As a person who’s used instructionals since 2003 to bolster his training, and who makes instructionals at https://www.chewjitsutraining.com/ , I think BJJ instructional vidoes can be useful.
So, in this video I’ll talk about my process of using instructionals and how I get the most out of them.
Obviously, I can’t give you the best way for everyone, but if you implement the strategies I talk about, then instructionals can be very useful for sure.
Hopefully, if you struggle learning with Instructionals or just want a strategy to use them, then you found this video helpful.

Today’s video came about while look at my questions from Instagram.
The question comes from a young guy, and the subject is training with his coach, and it was obvious that he had this outdated mindset, which I had when I was younger, which will inevitably hinder you Jiu-Jitsu.
In the video I’ll give a couple of analogies to help everyone understand how ridiculous this mindset can be, and how BJJ is one of the few sports where this is even a thought.
Specifically, I’ll talk about the student/athlete & coach relationship at the highest level in sports like Basketball and Football, where you’ll never run into the conflict that my messenger has.
When it comes to BJJ, a lot of times, there are these unrealistic expectations of what a coach should be, especially in relation to that coach training with his/her younger student/athletes.
This is just unrealistic.
To dive deeper into this, many of us, especially when we are younger, have this mindset that, if while rolling “I can beat up on my older coach”, then “I have nothing to learn” from them in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
This outdated mode of thinking doesn’t account for a lot of nuanced things, especially in relation to the coaches age, health, goals, etc.
Hopefully, if you are young and have fallen into this “coach must be a savage” trap, then you have a bit more perspective.
Remember, winning a roll isn’t everything. There’s so much more knowledge to be gained when you realize that. Keep learning and take what you can from your coaches as long as you can.
