Today’s BJJ technique video on Single Leg X Guard comes in response to one of the request from one of the viewers and fits right into our ongoing series on Butterfly Guard. In the previous videos in the series I’ve been showing how to hit the basic Over Under sweep from Butterfly Guard. Well in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, I’m sure you’re aware, that techniques eventually fail. And when they fail you’re going to need another option to work from.
In the video I show how to get to Single X (which could go to regular X Guard too) from a failed sweep. This is actually one of my best entries into Single Leg X.
The idea is simple, when you get a decent sweep attempt you’ll have the person off balance. While off balance you use that opportunity to slide through to the Single X and then attack with a sweep or submission depending on your preference. In the video I show an effective sweep from the position.

Something that I’ve been told many times now by BJJ students or instructors is that you should always be on what are called “Live Toes.”
Anytime I hear someone say “always” or “never” in BJJ, it tells me that they haven’t thought very deeply about what they’re doing and why.
I know why they’re told this – it’s because so much of modern BJJ is based on constant movement and being on your toes allows you to transition to a faster movement position but at the cost of control.
Here, I discuss the various foot positions and what the Pros and Cons of each are.
If you like my particular focus and style of teaching, you can get this kind of instruction almost daily for only $10/Month.

Even though we recently discussed that starting from the knees in jiu-jitsu is generally a useless position, there are some things you can do to start a grappling session from the knees that can mirror what we do from the standing position. Professor Josh Simon shares a takedown form the knees that has a practical application to the standing position. From standing the takedown would be osoto gari, knee on belly to armlock. Josh shares some insight into how to secure the position and make sure you don’t miss the armlock after the takedown.

In this video I break down one of my favorite sweeps from closed guard: The Pendulum Sweep.
I show many examples and scenarios taken from a recent rolling session I had with 2 of my students.
You will learn how to combine the Pendulum Sweep with the threat of an Armbar to maximize its effectiveness, and also how to recognize when your opponent is off-balanced.
