BJJ, Boxing, Judo, Sambo, Wrestling and all of the Combat Sports commonly used in MMA are incredible for creating inner discipline.
But not in a direct way. Rather, it’s often in an indirect way.
During the stress of hard training you’re often faced with the darker sides of your personality. The sides of your personality that often don’t show up in a day to day basis.
For instance if you get angry. You will learn in hard training session that you cannot train with anger. And so when the angry side of your self pops up you have to control it.
In the video I talk about how when I started Boxing. My EGO was a big problem for me. And through the hard sparring sessions I had to learn to be in better mental control.
This video is a response to the question asked by our friend who was in a Street Fight situation. During which he grappler the person but did not throw any punches.
After the fight he said he felt kind of “soft” because he didn’t throw any punches.
In this video I talk about the control we learn from combat sports and how it’s useful for making stronger both physically as well as mentally. After all the aim is self-defense. To defend yourself, not to harm people for no reason.
I hope you find the video helpful!

In training primarily grappling, and especially much on the ground, it is easy to get caught up focusing only on the competitive aspects in which striking is not involved. This can create some bad habits that leave you exposed for punches in many of your positions and transitions.
Bad habits can be avoided or remedied by including striking elements and considerations into your grappling training. I believe this is important even if your primary focus is competitive or sportive grappling, as it maintains your ability to handle striking situations for mma and self-defense situations.
Here are a few ideas that will help to punch-proof common positions from the ground grappling aspect.
