This is one of the most crucial sweeping combinations in my half guard game, which is of course built on the back of Eddie Bravo Lockdown. This style of half guard is the staple of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system.

Should we attack the Heel Hook or the Straight Ankle Lock?

It depends on our opponents reaction
& our own hip orientation to their knee.

If our hips are directly behind their knee, straight ankle lock.

If our hips are lateral to the knee, heel hook.

If our hips are in direct opposition of the knee, kneebar.

Here’s an old clip of some rolls at Spartan when we were focusing on Triangle Chokes for the month. You can see Brandon mostly playing around but looking to sharpen the sword on some particular techniques.

One thing to notice is how his HIPS shoot up to grab the triangle,

Not his feet/legs, his HIPS shoot up to make the connection and then the jobs of Posture Control / Angle are given to your hands and feet.

You have 4 limbs and 2 of them need to control the posture.

2 of them need to help adjust the angle.

This is a simple and efficient game that you can add to your Half Guard and Dog Fight. If you are already a Lockdown player, digging into these techniques and strategies will really add a new dimension to your game. I highly recommend giving a try for a few weeks in training.
I originally saw this from Nathan Orchard several years back. I’m not sure that he does it this way, but I have a ton of success like this. Feel free to ask questions in the comments. I’m here to help!

When attacking the Vaporizer submission,

It’s important to not get too greedy with the finish.

You have to put your knee safety as your priority before committing to the finish.

Bmac has some tips here to ensure you don’t blow out your knee while attacking this sub!

Rubber Guard can be intimidating, especially for those of us with less flexibility. But if you can do a good butterfly stretch, you can play pretty much any position in the Rubber Guard pretty safely. It’s really all about angles, winning the inside space, and dexterity over flexibility. Just like everything else in Jiu Jitsu!

As with all things, it’s not gonna work for you in the beginning. But as you build hours and mat time, you’ll be able to find these plays from the Rubber Guard.

“Rubber Guard is a staple of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu System.

It’s used to control posture and create angles to find submissions like armlocks and triangle chokes.

One horrible route you can go with the rubber guard is the gogoplata or gogo clinch paths which requires clearing the head. This is something bmac specializes in.

It can be a horrible move to make if you make it about flexibility but if you make it about finding angles even the less flexible guys can do it.”

Some days, you’re on the mats thinking about taking over the world and other typical things when it hits you.

You haven’t been truly evil enough today.

You hit that wrist lock earlier, that was evil.

Right?

If you’re like me you suck at the North South Choke. That’s actually really common. So when you get there in the future, you can try one of these 2 options from North South when the choke ins’t working for you.

The first is a simple Punch Choke variation to the traditional north south choke. It’s very important to pay attention to the body positioning and the weight distribution on this one.

The second option is absolutely the most brutal move I know. It’s a spine ripper. Full blow neck crank. 100% catch wrestling style goodness, but with an extra touch of bmac evil. The Dragon Sleeper with the Body Triangle. aka The Executioner aka The Epstecutioner aka The Johnny Buck Death Machine. lol

I’ve never seen anyone else do it with the Body Triangle before so I’m anxious to get your feedback on this one!

Use this move carefully and if you’re Johnny Buck you can just stand up with it like he tries to do with every other submission.

We recommend not doing that though because you should never believe anything ever told to you by Johnny Buck.

“Deep Half Guard is a great option especially when facing a heavier opponent.

For the guy on bottom, Deep Half will help make the top guy not seem so heavy because we’re only carrying the weight of one leg rather than his entire body.

It can be used to sweep, set up leg attacks and in this case, create back exposure for back takes or some front headlock attacks depending on how the opponent reacts.

Here, Bmac feels Lmacs weight tipping towards her hands and uses that to come out the back door to get a look at the back.

From here, we have a good look at back takes or else front headlock game if our opponent turns into us and we lose the back exposure.”
