Have your ever rolled with someone outside of a traditional Brazilian Jiu-jitsu background?
Maybe someone who has done MMA, Sambo, Wrestling, Judo, etc?
If so then you know that they grapple a little different
A different sort of cadence or style of rolling.
I found this out during my White-Purple Belt days where I began to be introduced to MMA training and would roll with people who only learned grappling through MMA.
In many cases I would get caught with submissions even through my knowledge of grappling and Brazilian Jiujitsu was superior.
Because their style and rhythm of grappling was different than mine, I had to adjust. Because where BJJ players typically fight more for position, they would just go crazy for submissions.
And I believe this is partly due to the fact that when you use grappling in and MMA situation. You have to have a sense of urgency with your techniques.
In today’s video I discuss this idea in response to our friends question who is struggling with a situation at an open mat where he feels a bit taken back by the people inside the gym.
If you’re ever grappling with someone outside of a traditional BJJ gym, then I hope this video is useful for you!

Have you ever not received credit for something when you felt like you should have? Perhaps you helped someone but then never received any recognition.
That’s what’s going on in today’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu video.

Our friend Jay who is a 4 stripe Blue Belt has taken upon himself to help out one of the White Belts in his gym with a Baseball Choke technique he’s developed.
And it worked! The BJJ White Belt took the technique and has been able to hit it several times in tournaments and in training. So much so, that this White Belt has become synonymous with this choke.
The only problem is that he has never given Jay any credit for the help.
Jay knows that he shouldn’t feel upset about this. But he says he’s found that it frustrates him.
In this video I draw some parallels to how I felt as a young Brazilian Jiujitsu coach and Jay’s situation.
And I talk about not giving people help in any situation on a conditional basis if you’re really trying to help them.
I also discuss how to turn this negative situation on the mats into a positive by channeling the negative energy into a positive by teaching more people.
But the biggest idea I try to share in this video is that if you take on the role of a teacher or coach in Brazilian Jiujitsu. You need to take joy out of teaching someone. Not getting recognition for it. Finding joy in someone else’s success.

In this video I sit down and answer questions with Eli Knight and Jared Jessup. Both of which are Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black belts under Royce Gracie.
You can find out more about these guys at the links below.
Eli Knight: https://www.youtube.com/user/eliknight173
Jared Jessup:

Here are the questions we answer:
1. How do Black Belts get stripes? (We also touch on their Blue Bars on their Black Belts)
2. What can you take away from BJJ for Self Defense even if they don’t focus on Self-Defense techniques all the time?
3. Should you accept a 2nd place medal if there were only 2 people in the tournament division.
4. How do you know what to teach in your BJJ classes and how to divide people up?
I hope that you enjoy the video and gain some cool perspectives from these knowledgeable and highly skilled Black Belts.
Jared and Eli come from different backgrounds in the BJJ community than I do. So it was fun talking and hearing out the various perspectives that they had on BJJ training and jiujitsu as a whole.

This is a video of 1 of my Blue Belts and I drilling some BJJ techniques and movements.
In the video you’ll see us drill Kimuras, Mono Platas, Armbars and Back Takes.
If you watch the video, hopefully you’ll see a few Brazilian Jiujitsu techniques that you can take away for your own BJJ training.
After we do the BJJ drilling we move on to some situational rolling. The rolling is to help both of us work on aspects of the game we’re working to improve.
I think this 2 part bit is important. Work the techniques, drill them. Then put them into live purposeful practice. I harp about this is my other videos and so I want you guys to see me doing it.
This is not the most intense practice. But it’s very helpful for my overall Brazilian Jiujitsu.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!

What do you do when you feel like you’re not ready for your BJJ promotion?
This is the question I got from Matt who is a 50 year old Blue Belt and was recently informed that he would be up for his promotion to Purple Belt.
In most cases this would be a good thing. But as soon as Matt was informed about his potential promotion. He instantly began to have feelings of doubt in himself.
He says that he’s in pretty good shape. But being 50 years old is tough in BJJ. And he struggles rolling with the younger, stronger practitioners even if they’re less experienced.
In this video I go through and share the idea of imposter syndrome. Where we feel like we’re faking it or that we aren’t good enough. I also share how at every single belt I was promoted to I had the same feelings of inadequacy in relation to my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu abilities.
Jordan Peterson talks about this in his recent book that we are tyrants to ourselves. Someone else could make the same mistake as us. But since we made it, we’ve very hard and judgmental.
Nothing wrong with pushing yourself to be better. But at the same time there has to be a limit.
If you’re struggling with being your own worst critic. I hope the video helps!

To cut weight or not to cut weight for BJJ competitions! That is the question for today’s video.
Shannon who is a 4 stripe Blue Belt is getting ready for a local BJJ tournament in 5 weeks.
And she is on the cusp of 2 different weight classes.
At the tournament there is a 141 weight class and a 152 weight class.
And her walking weight is 146.
This is with her training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu 6 days a week, eating well and feeling high levels of energy!
So she is signed up for the higher weight class for the Brazilian Jiujitsu competition and is wondering if it’s even worth it cut the weight.
Because she is so close to either or, honestly if she knows how to cut weight. She’d be find for her matches.
But in this video I touch on some basic ideas why I would encourage her NOT to cut weight for her upcoming BJJ competition.
One of the big reasons is that if she starts to shed some pounds while she is in the process of upping her training volume.
This can lead to a lot of negative effects.
If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video helps!

Have you ever competed right after a new BJJ belt promotion? This is what happened to our friend C who is competing on the tail of his recent belt promotion.
He says that essentially he’s nervous and doesn’t want to look like an idiot.
He says his coach even offered to take back the promotion but he declined saying he doesn’t want to be a sand bagger.
In this video I start by explaining that every single BJJ competitors or practitioner that we respect has all lost. Everyone has lost! Period.
I go on to share about my transition from White to Blue Belt in BJJ leading up to my first BJJ tournament at that level.
I go on to share about how I use the anxiety leading up to a fight or BJJ competition to fuel my training to make me better.
Whether you were recently promoted or if you’re just looking for some tips on getting ready for a Brazilian Jiujitsu competition that has you super nervous.
I hope this video helps!

The Over Under Pass in BJJ has been one of my favorite options for Guard Passing since I was a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
But the BJJ Over Under Pass definitely has some serious counters available for the person on the bottom if they know how to use them.
2 of the common counters to the Over Under Pass can be a “Bro Roll” and the Kimura. You may have a different name for the roll but that’s what we call it.
In this video I explain how I’ve encountered both of the problems in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training that our friend Johnathan has had as well.
The big idea in the video is to help you avoid 2 of the mistakes or problems I had with the Over Under Pass.
So if you’re using this Guard Pass or trying to add this into your guard passing game in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I hope the video is useful!
Thanks for watching!
