I am a big fan of using pins to advance positions, and there is no better place for pins than wrestling. It is the ultimate goal of wrestling, and they have centuries of experience.

BJJ and MMA are relatively new to the idea of pinning, as the goal is submission. So many people overlook the value of a good pin. Even wrestling is ignorant on how else to use a pin other than to pin.

So with some creative thinking and combining goals of pinning and submission fighting, we can create very powerful pins that can serve for submissions, TKO, and guard passing.

To start us off, I want to focus on the classic wrestling pin – the Cradle. Pretty much every wrestler on the planet knows the cradle. It is super simple and very effective.

But how will we use this pin?

I am going to show you a way to crush the sitting open guard and score a simple side mount!

One of the most important elements in order to become a successful finisher from the Back position is knowing how to clear your opponents defenses, a.k.a. hand fighting.
Trapping one of his arms with your leg is always a great option, but you may still need to deal with his grips in order to finish the choke.
In the video above I explain some strategies that you should be using if you wanna have a high finishing rate from the Back position.

Bernardo Faria uses his Half Guard ‘Faria Sweep’ to sweep and get to over under position. He control over under and back steps to the pass. He takes the back and attacks a bow and arrow choke. This leads to an armbar with spider web control which finishes the match.

Here’s the exercise that’ll improve your grip strength for BJJ the fastest

Do you like curriculums for BJJ? I personally have a love hate relationship with curriculums in relation to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

In some ways a BJJ curriculum can be incredibly as a guide to lead the way and to ensure that the bases are covered and maintaining a standard.

The negatives that I associate with a curriculum if forced on the students to rigidly is the fact that the focus then moves from exploration, discovery and the expression of the art and can move towards more memorization.

I also believe that one of the best benefits of Brazilian Jiujitsu is the ability to learn the love of practice and the grind. To do something, not because of what you will eventually achieve. But instead because you just enjoy doing it. And finding reasons why you love the day to day training. This lesson that I learned from Wrestling and BJJ has helped me in so many areas of my life. Because I’ve learned to grind out through difficult situations and learned to enjoy the struggle and challenge of tough situations.
