Getting caught in Kesa gatame just really is unpleasant. And the better the guy is a Kesa Gatame – the more pressure you are going to feel, the harder you will find it to breathe. You will feel like your ribs are being crushed and you are seconds from tapping many different submissions. But you can change the tables. That’s the great thing about Jiu Jitsu. You can metaphorically go from broke to rich in seconds – if you know the right moves. This stuff is basic. But it does not make them simple or to be ignored by the higher belts. On the contrary – the longer you are in Jiu Jitsu the more refined these ‘basics’ will become. You might call them ‘fundamentals’. Anyway guys, check out this video and give it a try on the mat. These bjj side control escapes have helped me out many times. I actually got hit with this technique when I was a blue belt and adopted it in my game. The key is just getting enough movement to make them post their hand out. After that you are free to move again.

If they do not post their hand out it should be fairly easy to finish the first arm roll escape. Again the key is momentum so I have to follow through without stopping. Otherwise this Escape will be extremely hard and will become a muscle move rather than actual technique.

By locking out the arm when you do the big wave you are stopping them from just squeezing you back down to the mat so be sure to really drill this detail in your head if you plan on using it!

In this video, I provide one tip on how to avoid knee injury when playing the De La Riva Guard.
Knee injuries are prevalent in BJJ and when playing ths type of guard you can be susceptible to knee injury such as an LCL strain or a meniscus injury due to the pressure on the knee. This is where proper positioning come in. I have my training partner and BJJ black belt Chad “The Beast” Hardy help me out in this video and demonstrate. He is very effective from this position and uses it quite a bit in training and tournaments.
