Strength training for BJJ is something I get lots of questions about.
I have a hunch this is because my meathead-ness is expressed often in BJJ.
One exercise that is excellent but at the same time can be a bit of a bugger for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner is the Squat.
The Squat is such a strong exercise for the whole body with endless variations.
One reason the Squat is so problematic for people who do BJJ is their hip tightness. This is caused by the constant flexion on the mat and the inconsistency with stretching to loosen and exercises to strengthen extension.
In this video I share a great piece of equipment the Belt Squat machine. This is the type of squat I like to do and it’s easy on the lower back.
There are a number of different ways details and benefits I share in the video. But if you’re a BJJ athlete or practitioner who wants to build stronger legs but avoids the traditional back squat because of pain in the lower back.
I’d simply invite you to try this exercise if you can. I’ve found with a number of our members in my gym that they’ve been able to use it with no issues whatsoever and have received an overall strength benefit.
This allows them to get stronger and still be ready for their BJJ training.
Hope this video was helpful!

Starting from the Lasso Guard we are going to create the space to hook our opponent’s leg with the Lasso Hook and we will be using our opposite leg to place it on our opponent’s hips to create more power for the sweep.

Starting from the closed guard we are going to use the flower sweep to force our opponent to post their hand on the mat, creating the gap for us to sit up and take our opponent’s back.

It is hard to narrow down, but these are, in my opinion, the first five submissions you should learn in Jiu-Jitsu. I based this on the criteria of versatility, efficiency, mechanics and principles. There are so many important considerations to make in regard to position and setup, but it is imperative you understand how these particular techniques work.
Let me know what your top five would be, and if you have any questions you think I might be able to help with. I really appreciate you watching, liking and subscribing!
Thanks again!

This video I go through some of my favorite ways of setting up the closed guard. The closed guard is one of the best positions in Jiu Jitsu for submissions control and catching your breath if you are tired. One problem most people have though is they are taught tons of attacks but no actual ways of setting up the position. In this video I go through some very practical set ups from standing, spider guard, De La Riva Guard, and Collar Sleeve Guard. Let me know if you guys have any questions. Thanks to my sponsor Vital Gear for helping support the channel.

While I am itching to get back on the mats, my knee still needs some more time to recover from the ACL surgery.
But worry not, I have one of my top black belts Jason Soares showing a drill sequence for Guillotine choke defense.
It starts off with a head and arm clinch, using the steering wheel pull to setup a knee strike, followed by a head snap to setup a flying guillotine choke.
The defender then is going to drop his hips to the opposite side and work the leg escape to side control. Finally, the finish on a stubborn opponent who refuses to let go of the Guillotine is to attack with the Von Flue Choke.
