The “S.I.” or sacroiliac joint is an area in the lower back that can get painful or feel “pinched.”
There are numerous causes for pain in this area which can occur frequently in Jiu-Jitsu from playing a bottom guard position and getting stacked or compressed.
This area can also get irritated and painful from other activities such as improper lifting mechanics or prolonged sitting.
I share two variations that can be very useful and effective. The first one is using a bed or treatment table. The second variation is excellent when a table is not available and you are getting loosened up at a Jiu-Jitsu gym prior to training.
Give these a try, but remember that core and hip stability is also important in preventing the recurrence of symptoms, so check out some of the other videos to get ideas on strengthening.

In today’s video I answer a question about BJJ training from our friend who is a Blue Belt in BJJ. He says that he enjoys rolling with the higher ranking belts inside his gym because they are a bit safer.
But the issue there is that he is almost always playing pure defense.
He enjoys rolling with the white belts and less experienced people because he can execute some offensive techniques. But the issue with them is that they aren’t as safe as the higher ranks.
So his question boils down to this. Do you have to train with white belts and less experienced people in Brazilian Jiujitsu, of can you just roll with the higher ones?
In my experience it’s good to have a mix, as I’ll explain in the video.
Against higher ranking belts you learn what good Jiu-jitsu feels like and you begin to zero in on your defense.
But it’s still important to focus some of your rolling attention on people less skilled than you. Because against these people you get a chance to play around with more offensive based techniques.
In this video I share a story from my experience with a friend who got way way better at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu once we had new people in the gym to train with.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

I want to start off by saying Banning jumping guard is a great rule to be in place for white belts.
Jumping guard. This technique can be great for a guard player and absolutely terrible for your opponent if they don’t know how to catch you properly.
That is why this Drill is so important and school sometimes forget to show their students. Even if it is illegal you should still be aware just in case. I see DQs happen all the time in tournaments due to people being unaware. This can cause a serious injury. Always be prepared for everything.
Now note this. I did not slam him to the mat for jumping guard. I simply jumped my legs back because I didn’t have time to catch him. There is a huge difference between putting force towards the mat and just going down with your opponent.
