This tip is absolutely crucial to finishing a tough opponent.
Not everyone is going to just give you a tap as soon as you lock something in. It takes a consistent squeeze to put someone away. I’ve been teaching for years now and this is one of the biggest problems I see with inexperienced grapplers.
You will see/feel them squeeze really hard for three seconds or so than they release the pressure. Than they squeeze again and repeat the cycle until they are gassed out.
Be sure to keep this tip in mind while attacking your chokes.

Last year, I did a seminar in the U.K. on how to deal with and pass the Half Guard.
I covered concepts and techniques on control and nullifying the opponenet’s attacks.
Here are some clips from that seminar. You can see how I teach and where my focus is.
If you’re interested in hosting me for a seminar, you can contact me at roymarshjiujitsu@gmail.com
In this BJJ rolling video video at our gym Derby City MMA you’ll see a good mixture of takedowns, guard passing and I almost got my back taken during one of my rolls by one of my purple belts.
During the BJJ rolling session I started off light with one of my purple belts who is nursing a rib injury. From there we picked up the intensity.
My second roll was with one of my BJJ purple belts who is also a MMA fighter and former wrestler. After a solid takedown he came after my back and almost had it!
After I managed to get out of the position I got on top and went for my own attacks. A lot of times when I roll with my guys I have to turn it up a little bit because they are getting good enough to give me a lot of trouble.
My last roll was with one of my other purple belts who is the kind of guy in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that is 200+lbs and somehow manages to bend and fold in half. During our roll we had some great scrambles. 1 where he caught me in a leg attack and another where I was able to get around to the back.
Hope you enjoyed the rolling video.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of being effective at jiu-jitsu is to have solid cardiovascular endurance. There is nothing worse than tiring out in the middle of a roll and getting crushed by your training partner or worse at a tournament because you “ran out of gas.”
If you want to get better at cardiovascular endurance for BJJ, then the obvious thing to do is to train jiu-jitsu.
But what if you can’t get to the gym? Well then this is where you have to look at other training tactics such as solo drilling.
I love using a heavy bag to work on guard passing drills for BJJ-specific endurance, timing, and muscle memory.
The type of cardiovascular activity you perform should also mimic or simulate the type of tournament you want to compete it.
If you are further out of competition, or have not trained in quite some time and feel out of shape, then check out some of my favorite cardio activities such as running or using the Airdyne bike along with interval sprint work to build up your endurance.

Stopped in to train with one of my friends today, and after the class, we had a short brainstorming about the art. Things of note were some discussion of half guard frame experimentation, loop choke details, playing butterfly guard and controlling the lasso.
